The department has the authority to consult with physicians, hospitals, institutions, and individuals engaged in diagnosing and treating any person diagnosed with or reasonably suspected of being exposed to a communicable disease.

- Communicable disease: includes :
(a) An illness due to a specific infectious agent or its toxic products that arises through transmission of that agent or its products from an infected person, animal, fomite, or reservoir to a susceptible host, either directly or indirectly, through an intermediate plant or animal host, vector, or inanimate environment and which is determined to be a reportable disease pursuant to §. - Person: includes natural persons, partnerships, associations, cooperative corporations, limited liability companies, and corporations. See South Dakota Codified Laws 2-14-2
