Terms Used In New Hampshire Revised Statutes > Chapter 613 - Summoning Witnesses From Without a State

Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.

Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party.
state: shall include any territory of the United States and District of Columbia. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 613:1
Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.

Witness: as used in this chapter shall include a person whose testimony is desired in any proceeding or investigation by a grand jury or in a criminal action, prosecution, or proceeding. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 613:1
