Terms Used In New Hampshire Revised Statutes 592-A:6

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • justice: when applied to a magistrate, shall mean a justice of a municipal court, or a justice of the peace having jurisdiction over the subject-matter. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:12
  • Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
  • state: when applied to different parts of the United States, may extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories, so called; and the words "United States" shall include said district and territories. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:4
District and municipal courts have the powers of a justice of the peace and quorum throughout the state and have jurisdiction as provided in N.H. Rev. Stat. § 502-A:11 and 14 and N.H. Rev. Stat. § 502:18.
