Terms Used In Maine Revised Statutes > Title 9-A > Article 15 - Private Student Lender Registry

  • Adult: means a person who has attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Education or the commissioner's designee. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 1
  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
  • Dealer: includes a person who customarily sells manufactured housing to consumers and is subject to the jurisdiction of this State under Title 14, section 704?A. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 1402
  • Department: means the Department of Education. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 1
  • Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
  • Installer: means any person, including but not limited to a dealer or mechanic, who installs or sets up manufactured housing for a buyer. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 1402
  • Membership: means active participation in the program of a school from the date of enrollment to the time the student withdraws or is absent from the school for 10 consecutive days for reasons other than illness. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 15001
  • Parent: means a parent, guardian or legal guardian. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 1
  • Principal: means the person who supervises the operation and management of a school and school property as determined necessary by the superintendent under policies established by the school board. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 1
  • Private school: means an academy, seminary, institute or other private corporation or body formed for educational purposes covering kindergarten through grade 12 or any portion thereof. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 1
  • Provider of postsecondary education: means a person engaged in the business of providing postsecondary education directly, by correspondence or by the Internet to a person located in the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-A Sec. 15-101
  • Public school: means a school that is governed by a school board of a school administrative unit and funded primarily with public funds. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 1
  • Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land.
  • School administrative unit: means the state-approved unit of school administration and includes a municipal school unit, school administrative district, community school district, regional school unit or any other municipal or quasi-municipal corporation responsible for operating or constructing public schools, except that it does not include a career and technical education region.   • School board: means the governing body with statutory powers and duties for a school administrative unit. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 1
  • Student financing: means an extension of credit or a debt or obligation owned or incurred by a student, contractual or otherwise, that:

  • Student financing company: means a person engaged in the business of making or extending credit to a student for postsecondary education expenses or a holder of debt or obligation owned or incurred by a student to finance postsecondary education expenses.   • Superintendent: means the Superintendent of Consumer Credit Protection within the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 9-A Sec. 15-101
  • Superintendent: means the person in a school administrative unit or school union appointed and having the authority and responsibility under this Title and other applicable statutes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A Sec. 1
  • United States: includes territories and the District of Columbia. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
  • Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
