- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Child: means a son or daughter under 21 years of age or a son or daughter who is incapable of earning a living and without sufficient means. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 3501
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- Dam: means any human-made artificial barrier, including appurtenant works, the site on which it is located and appurtenant rights of flowage and access, that impounds or diverts a river, stream or great pond and that is 2 feet or more in height and has an impounding capacity at maximum water storage elevation of 15 acre-feet or more. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 38 Sec. 817
- Height: means , in reference to a dam, the vertical distance in feet from the natural bed of the stream or watercourse measured at the downstream toe of the barrier, or from the lowest elevation of the outside limit of the barrier, if it is not across a stream channel or watercourse, to the maximum capable water storage elevation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 38 Sec. 817
- in writing: include printing and other modes of making legible words. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Littoral proprietor: means an owner or lessee of property on the shore of a lake impounded by a particular dam. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 38 Sec. 817
- Municipality: includes cities, towns and plantations, except that "municipality" does not include plantations in Title 10, chapter 110, subchapter IV; or Title 30?A, Part 2. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
- Parent: includes either a biological parent or an adoptive parent. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 3501
- Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
- Person: means any individual, firm, association, partnership, corporation, trust, municipality, quasi-municipal corporation, state agency, federal agency or other legal entity. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 38 Sec. 817
- Riparian proprietor: means an owner or lessee of property on the bank of a river or stream or shore of a pond or other small body of water impounded by a particular dam. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 38 Sec. 817
- Testify: Answer questions in court.
- Town: includes cities and plantations, unless otherwise expressed or implied. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
