61-3-572. Additional electric vehicle registration fees — disposition. In addition to the registration fees required pursuant to the provisions of Title 61, chapter 3, at the time of initial and renewal registration for an electric vehicle, there is an additional fee based on the weight of the electric vehicle as provided:

Terms Used In Montana Code 61-3-572

  • Authorized agent: means a person who has executed a written agreement with the department and is specifically authorized by the department to electronically access and update the department's motor vehicle titling, registration, or driver records, using an approved automated interface, for specific functions or purposes on behalf of a third party. See Montana Code 61-1-101
  • Department: means the department of justice acting directly or through its duly authorized officers or agents. See Montana Code 61-1-101
  • Electric vehicle: means a vehicle that:

    (i)is originally equipped with a 100%-electric motor that draws propulsion energy solely from a battery with at least 20 kilowatt hours of capacity that can be recharged from an external source of electricity;

    (ii)has at least four wheels; and

    (iii)is manufactured primarily for use on public streets, roads, and highways. See Montana Code 61-3-571

  • State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See Montana Code 1-1-201
  • Vehicle: means a device in, on, or by which any person or property may be transported or drawn on a public highway, except devices moved by animal power or used exclusively on stationary rails or tracks. See Montana Code 61-1-101

(1)The annual registration fees for electric vehicles other than plug-in hybrid electric vehicles is as follows:

(a)$130 for class 1 vehicles;

(b)$190 for class 2 vehicles;

(c)$340 for class 3 vehicles; and

(d)$1,100 for class 4 vehicles.

(2)The annual registration fees for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles is as follows:

(a)$70 for class 1 vehicles;

(b)$100 for class 2 vehicles;

(c)$210 for class 3 vehicles; and

(d)$700 for class 4 vehicles.

(3)The county treasurer or an authorized agent shall transmit the fees provided for in this section to the state as provided in 15-1-504 for deposit to the credit of the department in the highway restricted account provided for in 15-70-126.
