Terms Used In Louisiana Revised Statutes 13:1806

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.

A child custody determination made by a court of this state that had jurisdiction under this Act binds all persons who have been served in accordance with the laws of this state or notified in accordance with La. Rev. Stat. 13:1808 or who have submitted to the jurisdiction of the court, and who have been given an opportunity to be heard.  As to those persons, the determination is conclusive as to all decided issues of law and fact except to the extent the determination is modified.
