- Life estate: A property interest limited in duration to the life of the individual holding the interest (life tenant).

- State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See Kansas Statutes 77-201
- Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
Except as otherwise provided in the terms of a trust or this act, this act applies when the state of Kansas is the principal place of administration of a trust or estate or the situs of property that is not held in a trust or estate and is subject to a life estate or other term interest described in Kan. Stat. Ann. 2023 Supp. 58-9a-103, and amendments thereto. By accepting the trusteeship of a trust having its principal place of administration in this state or by moving the principal place of administration of a trust to this state, the trustee submits to the application of this act to any matter within the scope of this act involving the trust.
