- Appraisal: A determination of property value.
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Dependent: A person dependent for support upon another.
- Director: means the Director of the Institute appointed under section 9103 of this title. See 20 USC 9101
- Donor: The person who makes a gift.
- effective registration date: means the date of international registration determined by the International Bureau under the treaty. See 35 USC 381
- Equitable: Pertaining to civil suits in "equity" rather than in "law." In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. For example, a trial by jury is normally available in "law" cases but not in "equity" cases. Source: U.S. Courts
- Fair Credit Reporting Act: A federal law, established in 1971 and revised in 1997, that gives consumers the right to see their credit records and correct any mistakes. Source: OCC
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.

- Institute: means the Institute of Museum and Library Services established under section 9102 of this title. See 20 USC 9101
- international application: means an application filed under the treaty. See 35 USC 351
- international application designating the United States: means an international application specifying the United States as a country in which a patent is sought, regardless where such international application is filed. See 35 USC 351
- International Bureau: means the international intergovernmental organization which is recognized as the coordinating body under the treaty and the Regulations. See 35 USC 351

- international design application: means an application for international registration. See 35 USC 381
- international registration: means the international registration of an industrial design filed under the treaty. See 35 USC 381

- inventor: means the individual or, if a joint invention, the individuals collectively who invented or discovered the subject matter of the invention. See 35 USC 100
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- museum: means a public, tribal, or private nonprofit agency or institution organized on a permanent basis for essentially educational, cultural heritage, or aesthetic purposes, that utilizes a professional staff, owns or utilizes tangible objects, cares for the tangible objects, and exhibits the tangible objects to the public on a regular basis. - Museum and Library Services Board: means the National Museum and Library Services Board established under section 9105a of this title. See 20 USC 9101
- Oath: A promise to tell the truth.
- oath: includes affirmation, and "sworn" includes affirmed. See 1 USC 1
- Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
- State: means each of the 50 States of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau. - treaty: means the Patent Cooperation Treaty done at Washington, on June 19, 1970. See 35 USC 351
- treaty: means the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs adopted at Geneva on July 2, 1999. See 35 USC 381
