In the event an ordinance enacted pursuant to Section 54253 authorizing a local agency to enter into a privatization project agreement is subjected to a successful referendum election, no ordinance authorizing the local agency to enter into a franchise, license, or service agreement for the same or substantially the same purpose shall be passed by that local agency for a period of one year from the date of the referendum, repeal, or rescission.

Terms Used In California Government Code 54256
- Local agency: means any city, county, city and county, special district, or county service area. See California Government Code 54250
- Privatization project: as used in this article , includes the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority's Arlington Basin Groundwater Desalter Project, which will treat groundwater contaminated by wastewater. See California Government Code 54250
- Rescission: The cancellation of budget authority previously provided by Congress. The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 specifies that the President may propose to Congress that funds be rescinded. If both Houses have not approved a rescission proposal (by passing legislation) within 45 days of continuous session, any funds being withheld must be made available for obligation.
