Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
person: includes a corporation as well as a natural person. See Alabama Code 1-1-1

Any person diverting any stream, whether navigable or not, from its natural channel, is liable to any party aggrieved for the damages sustained.
