Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 5:8-15
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State. - Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
No person shall be excused from testifying or producing any book or document in any investigation or hearing, when ordered so to do by the members of the commission holding the same, upon the ground that testimony or documentary evidence required of him may tend to incriminate or subject him to penalty or forfeiture, but no person shall be prosecuted, punished or subjected to any penalty or forfeiture on account of any matter or thing concerning which he shall, under oath, have testified or produced documentary evidence, except that he shall not be exempt from prosecution or punishment for any perjury committed by him in his testimony.
