- person: may extend and be applied to bodies politic and corporate, as well as to individuals. See Michigan Laws 8.3l
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. A person who has cattle, horses, hogs, sheep, or goats may adopt a brand by applying to the secretary of state. The brand shall not be an earmark, tattoo, or vaccination mark. The secretary of state shall assign each brand an identification number and shall record the brand and number. The secretary of state shall not approve a brand unless the brand is different from all other valid brands.
