Common law: The legal system that originated in England and is now in use in the United States. It is based on judicial decisions rather than legislative action.
State: when applied to states of the United States, includes the District of Columbia, the commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the several territories organized by Congress. See Wisconsin Statutes 990.01

The common law and principles of equity supplement this chapter, except to the extent modified by this chapter or any other state law.
