- Shaft: any vertical or near-vertical opening through the strata which is to be used for ventilation or escapement, or for the hoisting and lowering of men, ore or material in connection with the mining of minerals. See Missouri Laws 293.010
Any new escapement shaft constructed or opened for operation after the effective date of this chapter, shall be equipped with a substantial hoist or stairway. Such stairway shall be constructed at an angle not greater than forty-five degrees, and shall be provided with handrails and platform or landing at each turn of stairway.
