Rhode Island General Laws 12-20-6. Fees of city and town police departments and state agencies
For each criminal complaint filed in the district court by a city or town police department, the state police, or a state agency, the clerk of the district court shall assess against the defendant and remit to the city or town or the state the sum of three dollars and fifty cents ($3.50), to be taxed as costs against the defendant.

- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
- town: may be construed to include city; the words "town council" include city council; the words "town clerk" include city clerk; the words "ward clerk" include clerk of election district; the words "town treasurer" include city treasurer; and the words "town sergeant" include city sergeant.
