Rhode Island General Laws 27-29-17.1. Definitions
For the purpose of § 27-29-17 — § 27-29-17.4:
(1) “Commissioner” means the commissioner of insurance.
(2) “Expiration date” means the date upon which coverage under a policy ends. It also means, for a policy written for a term longer than one year or with no fixed expiration date, each annual anniversary date of such policy.
(3) “Nonrenewal” means termination of a policy at its expiration date.
(4) “Renewal” or “to renew” means the issuance of or the offer by an insurer to issue a policy succeeding a policy previously issued and delivered by the same insurer or an insurer within the same group of insurers, or the issuance of a certificate or notice extending the term of an existing policy for a specified period beyond its expiration date.

Terms Used In Rhode Island General Laws 27-29-17.1
- certificate: means any contract of insurance, indemnity, medical, health, or hospital service, suretyship, or annuity issued, proposed for issuance, or intended for issuance, by any insurer. See Rhode Island General Laws 27-29-2
- Commissioner: means the director of the department of business regulation. See Rhode Island General Laws 27-29-2
- Insurer: means any person, reciprocal exchange, interinsurer, Lloyds insurer, fraternal benefit society, and any other legal entity engaged in the business of insurance, including agents, brokers, insurance producers, adjusters, and third-party administrators. See Rhode Island General Laws 27-29-2
