Every railroad corporation that shall refuse or neglect to comply with an order, or with a confirmation of such order upon appeal, shall, for every day’s neglect after seven (7) days from the date of the service of the order upon the president, treasurer, or any director of the corporation, forfeit five hundred dollars ($500), one-half (½) thereof to the use of the state, and one-half (½) thereof to the use of the city or town where the crossing is located.

Terms Used In Rhode Island General Laws 39-8-10
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- Railroad: means and includes every railroad other than a street railway, by whatsoever power, operated for public use in the conveyance in this state of persons or property for compensation, with all bridges, ferries, tunnels, switches, spurs, tracks, stations, wharves, and terminal facilities of every kind, used, operated, controlled, leased, or owned by or in connection with any railroad. - town: may be construed to include city; the words "town council" include city council; the words "town clerk" include city clerk; the words "ward clerk" include clerk of election district; the words "town treasurer" include city treasurer; and the words "town sergeant" include city sergeant.
