The exercise of the powers granted by ss. 243.50–243.77 is in all respects for the benefit of the people of this state. Because the operation and maintenance of a project by the authority or a participating institution constitutes the performance of an essential public function, neither the authority nor a participating institution is required to pay any taxes or assessments upon or in respect of a project or any property acquired or used by the authority or a participating institution under ss. 243.50–243.77 or upon the income therefrom, and any bonds issued under ss. 243.50–243.77, any security therefor, their transfer, and the income therefrom, including any profit made on the sale thereof, and all notes, mortgages, security agreements, letters of credit, or other instruments that arise out of or are given to secure the repayment of bonds issued in connection with a project financed under ss. 243.50–243.77, shall at all times be free from taxation by the state or any local unit, political subdivision, or other instrumentality of the state. The exemption granted by this section is not applicable to any tax imposed by chapter 220 on interest, income, or profits or on debt obligations owned by corporations.
