- Advisory board: means the advisory board of the birth defects surveillance system. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:31.42
- Birth defect: means an abnormality of structure, function, or metabolism that develops during prenatal, perinatal, or early postnatal life that is diagnosed before a child reaches three years of age. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:31.42
- Department: means the Louisiana Department of Health. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:31.42
- Discovery: Lawyers' examination, before trial, of facts and documents in possession of the opponents to help the lawyers prepare for trial.
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- Office: means the office of public health within the Louisiana Department of Health. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:31.42
- Secretary: means the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:31.42
- Surveillance system: means the process that is used to collect data about children with birth defects. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:31.42
