A county is a political and geographic subdivision of a state in the U.S. and has some governmental authority. Numerous consolidated city–counties exist where a city has merged with its county, forming a unified jurisdiction that has the governmental powers of both entities. Some states do not have counties, however, and the governmental functions vary somewhat.
