Under the Alabama Code, punishments for crimes depend on the classification. In the case of this section:Class | Prison | Fine |

Class A felony | 10 years to life | up to $60,000 |
Class B felony | 2 to 20 years | up to $30,000 |
Class C felony | 1 to 10 years | up to $15,000 |
Class D felony | 1 to 5 years | up to $7,500 |
Terms Used In Alabama Code 13A-5-6
- Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
- following: means next after. See Alabama Code 1-1-1
- year: means a calendar year; but, whenever the word "year" is used in reference to any appropriations for the payment of money out of the treasury, it shall mean fiscal year. See Alabama Code 1-1-1
