- Indictment: The formal charge issued by a grand jury stating that there is enough evidence that the defendant committed the crime to justify having a trial; it is used primarily for felonies.
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the several territories of the United States. See Alabama Code 1-1-1
An indictment must contain, in the caption or body thereof, the name of the state, county, court and time when it is preferred and must conclude “against the peace and dignity of the State of Alabama.”
