(a) This chapter does not create a debt of the state. Each district shall establish, maintain, and operate under a balanced budget. The state is not responsible for the debts of a school district.

Terms Used In Alaska Statutes 14.17.900

  • Balanced budget: A budget in which receipts equal outlays.
  • Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
  • state: means the State of Alaska unless applied to the different parts of the United States and in the latter case it includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See Alaska Statutes 01.10.060
(b) Money to carry out the provisions of this chapter may be appropriated annually by the legislature into the public education fund. If the amount appropriated to the fund for the purposes of this chapter is insufficient to meet the allocations authorized under Alaska Stat. § 14.17.40014.17.470 for a fiscal year, state aid shall be reduced according to Alaska Stat. § 14.17.400(b).
