A. No person shall be eligible for the office of public defender or deputy public defender unless he is an attorney at law, licensed and in good standing in this state.

Terms Used In Arizona Laws 11-582

  • Person: means an individual, corporation, business trust, estate, trust, partnership, limited liability company, association, joint venture, public corporation, government or governmental subdivision, agency or instrumentality or any other legal or commercial entity. See Arizona Laws 11-487.01
  • Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.
  • State: means a state of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands or any territory or insular possession subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. See Arizona Laws 11-487.01

B. The public defender shall receive that salary which the board of supervisors shall determine, provided that it shall be not less than seventy per cent of that paid to the county attorney.

C. The board of supervisors shall not pay a salary to any person as public defender or deputy public defender who is not eligible for the office.
