- Accessories: when used in connection with an antenna or rotator installation or repair, includes, but is not limited to, masts, towers, clamps, guy wires, eye hooks, standoff insulators, roof saddles, vent pipe mounts, chimney mount kits, signal amplifiers/boosters, multiset couplers, transmission lines, control cables, directional control units, and other devices as may be used from time to time to effect installation or repair. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Adjourn: A motion to adjourn a legislative chamber or a committee, if passed, ends that day's session.
- administrator: means a person who performs or arranges the collection, maintenance, or disbursement of moneys to compensate any party for claims or repairs pursuant to a service contract, and who also performs or arranges any of the following activities on behalf of service contract sellers:

- Adoption date: means the date the board of directors adopts the plan of conversion. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Allegation: something that someone says happened.
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Antenna: includes , but is not limited to, a resonant device designed especially for the purpose of capturing electromagnetic energy transmitted by direct satellite or commercial radio or television broadcasting facilities. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Appliance repair industry: means those activities defined in paragraph (4) of subdivision (f). See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Applicant or contracting agency: means a school district, community college district, college or university, county superintendent of schools, county, city, public agency, private nontax-exempt agency, private tax-exempt agency, or other entity that is authorized to establish, maintain, or operate services pursuant to this chapter. See California Education Code 8205
- assessed value: means 25 percent of full value to, and including, the 1980-81 fiscal year, and 100 percent of full value for the 1981-82 fiscal year and fiscal years thereafter. See California Government Code 25
- Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
- Attendance: means the number of children present at a preschool facility. See California Education Code 8205
- Authority: means the California Health Facilities Financing Authority established pursuant to §. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.51
- Authority: means the California Health Facilities Financing Authority established pursuant to §. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.82
- auxiliary dolly: is a vehicle, not designed for carrying persons or property on its own structure, which is so constructed and used in conjunction with a semitrailer as to support a portion of the weight of the semitrailer and any load thereon, but not permanently attached to the semitrailer, although a part of the weight of such dolly may rest on another vehicle. See California Vehicle Code 225
- axle: is a structure or portion of a structure consisting of one or more shafts, spindles, or bearings in the same vertical transverse plane by means of which, in conjunction with wheels mounted on said shafts, spindles, or bearings, a portion of the weight of a vehicle and its load, if any, is continuously transmitted to the roadway when the vehicle is in motion. See California Vehicle Code 230
- Baseline: Projection of the receipts, outlays, and other budget amounts that would ensue in the future without any change in existing policy. Baseline projections are used to gauge the extent to which proposed legislation, if enacted into law, would alter current spending and revenue levels.
- Board: means the county board of supervisors acting as the governing authority of a county service area. See California Government Code 25210.2
- Bonds: as used in this chapter means the written evidence of any obligation incurred by the board payable out of revenues as provided in this chapter in order to secure funds with which to carry out the purposes of this chapter irrespective of the form of such obligation whether in the form of bonds, notes, debentures, interest bearing certificates or other forms prescribed by the board. See California Government Code 26486
- Bureau: means the Bureau of Household Goods and Services. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- bus: is a ny vehicle, including a trailer bus, designed, used, or maintained for carrying more than 15 persons including the driver. See California Vehicle Code 233
- business: includes a proprietorship, partnership, corporation, and any other form of commercial enterprise. See California Vehicle Code 234
- California state preschool program: means those programs that offer part-day or full-day, or both, educational programs for eligible three- and four-year-old children. See California Education Code 8205
- camper: is a structure designed to be mounted upon a motor vehicle and to provide facilities for human habitation or camping purposes. See California Vehicle Code 243
- Chief: means the Chief of the Bureau of Household Goods and Services. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Children with exceptional needs: means either of the following:

- City: includes incorporated city, city and county, municipal corporation, municipality, town and incorporated town. See California Financial Code 13
- City: includes "city and county" and "incorporated town" but does not include "unincorporated town" or "village. See California Government Code 20
- City: includes "city and county. See California Insurance Code 15
- Commercial dealer: means any person who deals in products or who otherwise by his or her occupation holds himself or herself out as having knowledge or skill peculiar to products, or any person who is in the business of remanufacturing, retrofitting, selling, leasing, subletting, or otherwise placing into the stream of commerce, a product. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- commercial vehicle: is a motor vehicle of a type required to be registered under this code used or maintained for the transportation of persons for hire, compensation, or profit or designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property. See California Vehicle Code 260
- commission: means the California Transportation Commission. See California Streets and Highways Code 22
- Committee: means the Children's Hospital Bond Act Finance Committee created pursuant to Section 1179. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.51
- Committee: means the Children's Hospital Bond Act Finance Committee created pursuant to Section 1179. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.82
- Computer system: includes , but is not limited to, a central processing unit that performs data manipulation functions, and any associated peripheral devices, including, but not limited to, keyboards, display terminals, printers, or disk drives. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Construction: includes :

- Consumer goods: means any new or used product or part thereof that is used, bought, or leased for use primarily for personal, family, or household purposes, including assistive devices. See California Business and Professions Code 9855
- contestant: means any person initiating an election contest. See California Elections Code 16002
- Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time.
- Converted company: means the converted insurer or converted mutual holding company, as the case may be. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Converted insurer: means the incorporated stock insurer into which a medical malpractice mutual insurer has been converted or merged or redomiciled in accordance with the provisions of this article. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Converted mutual holding company: means the stock corporation into which a mutual holding company has been converted in accordance with this article. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Converting mutual company: means , for a plan of conversion under this article, the medical malpractice mutual insurer or mutual holding company that is converting under the plan. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
- Cost: includes , but is not limited to, expenditures that are related to the operation of preschool programs. See California Education Code 8205
- County: includes "city and county. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17

- Deed: The legal instrument used to transfer title in real property from one person to another.
- Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
- Defendant: means that person whose election or nomination is contested or those persons receiving an equal and highest number of votes, other than the contestant, where, in other than primary elections, the body canvassing the returns declares that no one person has received the highest number of votes for the contested office. - Demutualization: means the conversion of a medical malpractice mutual insurer into a stock insurer without the establishment of a mutual holding company or the conversion of a mutual holding company into a stock corporation. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Department: means the Department of Consumer Affairs. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- department: means State Department of Health Services. See California Health and Safety Code 20
- Department: means the Department of Transportation of this state. See California Streets and Highways Code 20
- Department: means the Department of Motor Vehicles except, when used in Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 2100) of Division 2 and in Divisions 11 (commencing with Section 21000), 12 (commencing with Section 24000), 13 (commencing with Section 29000), 14 (commencing with Section 31600), 14. - Deposition: An oral statement made before an officer authorized by law to administer oaths. Such statements are often taken to examine potential witnesses, to obtain discovery, or to be used later in trial.
- Direct satellite signal receiving equipment: includes , but is not limited to, receivers, down converters, amplifiers, and audio or video processors related to the reception of audio, video, or data signals broadcasted or rebroadcasted by communication satellites located in space. - Director: means the Director of Consumer Affairs. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Director: means "State Director of Health Services. See California Health and Safety Code 21
- Director: means the director of the department. See California Streets and Highways Code 21
- Dismissal: The dropping of a case by the judge without further consideration or hearing. Source:
- distributor: is a ny person other than a manufacturer who sells or distributes new vehicles subject to registration under this code, new trailers subject to identification pursuant to Section 5014. See California Vehicle Code 296
- Domestic: means organized under the laws of this State, whether or not admitted. See California Insurance Code 26
- Donor: The person who makes a gift.
- drawbar: is a rigid structure forming a connection between a trailer and a towing vehicle, securely attached to both vehicles by nonrigid means and carrying no part of the load of either vehicle. See California Vehicle Code 300
- driver: is a person who drives or is in actual physical control of a vehicle. See California Vehicle Code 305
- Early childhood programs: means those programs that offer a full range of services for children from infancy to 13 years of age, for any part of a day, by a public, private, or proprietary agency, in centers and family childcare homes. See California Education Code 8205
- Effective date: means , for the conversion of a medical malpractice mutual insurer, the date upon which the conversion of the mutual insurer is effective, as specified in the commissioner's amendment to the mutual insurer's certificate of authority issued in accordance with Section 4097. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Election: means any election including a primary that is provided for under this code. See California Elections Code 318
- Electronic repair industry: means those activities defined in paragraph (1), (2), or (3) of subdivision (f). See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Electronic set: includes , but is not limited to, any television, radio, audio or video recorder or playback equipment, video camera, video game, video monitor, computer system, cellular device, such as a telephone or tablet, photocopier, facsimile machine, or any other device that depends for its functioning, in whole or in part, on any digital electronic embedded or attached to the product and has a value over ten dollars ($10) and is normally used or sold for personal, family, household, or home office use. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Eligible members: means , for the conversion of a mutual insurer, members of the mutual insurer who are of record, fully paid-up and otherwise in good standing on the mutual insurer's adoption date and on its effective date, but shall not include those persons covered solely under a reporting endorsement to a claims made policy on either date. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- End consumer: means a person who purchases a product for any purpose other than resale. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- Engineering and traffic survey: as used in this code , means a survey of highway and traffic conditions in accordance with methods determined by the Department of Transportation for use by state and local authorities. See California Vehicle Code 627
- Entitlement: A Federal program or provision of law that requires payments to any person or unit of government that meets the eligibility criteria established by law. Entitlements constitute a binding obligation on the part of the Federal Government, and eligible recipients have legal recourse if the obligation is not fulfilled. Social Security and veterans' compensation and pensions are examples of entitlement programs.
- Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
- Family childcare home education network: means an entity organized under law that contracts with the department to make payments to licensed family childcare home providers and to provide educational and support services to those providers and to children and families eligible for California state preschool program services. See California Education Code 8205
- Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation: A government corporation that insures the deposits of all national and state banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System. Source: OCC
- Financial and compliance audit: means a systematic review or appraisal to determine each of the following:

- First seller: means any retailer selling a product that has not been used or has not previously been owned. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- Foreign: means not organized under the laws of this State, whether or not admitted. See California Insurance Code 27
- Four-year-old children: means children who will have their fourth birthday on or before December 1 of the fiscal year in which they are enrolled in a California state preschool program, or a child whose fifth birthday occurs after September 1 of the fiscal year in which they are enrolled in a California state preschool and whose parent or guardian has opted to retain or enroll them in a California state preschool program. See California Education Code 8205
- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.
- Freeway: means a highway in respect to which the owners of abutting lands have no right or easement of access to or from their abutting lands or in respect to which such owners have only limited or restricted right or easement of access. See California Streets and Highways Code 23.5
- full-time: means preschool services certified for a child for 25 or more hours per week. See California Education Code 8205
- Fund: means the Children's Hospital Bond Act Fund created pursuant to Section 1179. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.51
- Fund: means the Children's Hospital Bond Act Fund created pursuant to Section 1179. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.82
- Funded debt: as used in this chapter , means all interest-bearing indebtedness of a corporation not maturing within one year of the date the indebtedness was incurred. See California Financial Code 800
- Funded enrollment: means the number of subsidized children funded to be enrolled, based on the maximum reimbursable amount, contract rate, inclusive of any adjustment factors, and approved program calendar, by a California state preschool program contractor. See California Education Code 8205
- General public paratransit vehicle: means any motor vehicle designed for carrying no more than 24 persons and the driver, that provides local transportation to the general public, including transportation of pupils at or below the 12th-grade level to or from a public or private school or school activity, under the exclusive jurisdiction of a publicly owned and operated transit system through one of the following modes: dial-a-ride, subscription service, or route-deviated bus service. - Generally accepted auditing standards: means the auditing standards set forth in the financial and compliance element of the "Government Auditing Standards" issued by the Comptroller General of the United States and incorporating the audit standards of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. - Grace period: The number of days you'll have to pay your bill for purchases in full without triggering a finance charge. Source: Federal Reserve
- Grant: means the distribution of money in the fund by the authority to children's hospitals for projects pursuant to this part or to an eligible hospital pursuant to this part. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.82
- Health services: include , but are not limited to, all of the following:

- highway: includes bridges, culverts, curbs, drains, and all works incidental to highway construction, improvement, and maintenance. See California Streets and Highways Code 23
- Highway: is a way or place of whatever nature, publicly maintained and open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel. See California Vehicle Code 360
- Household: means any product used under any of the following circumstances:

- Impeachment: (1) The process of calling something into question, as in "impeaching the testimony of a witness." (2) The constitutional process whereby the House of Representatives may "impeach" (accuse of misconduct) high officers of the federal government for trial in the Senate.
- Importer: means any person who brings into this country, and places into the stream of commerce, a product. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- Independent auditors: means public accountants who have no direct or indirect relationship with the functions or activities being audited or with the business conducted by any of the officials or contractors being audited. See California Education Code 8335
- Indictment: The formal charge issued by a grand jury stating that there is enough evidence that the defendant committed the crime to justify having a trial; it is used primarily for felonies.
- Inhabited territory: means territory within which there reside 12 or more registered voters. See California Government Code 25210.2
- Insurance agent: means a person authorized, by and on behalf of an insurer, to transact all classes of insurance other than life, disability, or health insurance, on behalf of an admitted insurance company. See California Insurance Code 31
- Insurer: includes the California FAIR Plan. See California Insurance Code 1875
- Interrogatories: Written questions asked by one party of an opposing party, who must answer them in writing under oath; a discovery device in a lawsuit.
- Liquid: means a liquid preparation that flows readily in its natural state at room temperature containing one or more soluble chemical substances usually dissolved in water or other solvents. See California Health and Safety Code 108755
- local agency formation commission: means a local agency formation commission that operates in the county pursuant to the Cortese-Knox-Hertzberg Local Government Reorganization Act of 2000, Division 3 (commencing with Section 56000) of Title 5. See California Government Code 25210.2
- Local authorities: means the legislative body of every county or municipality having authority to adopt local police regulations. See California Vehicle Code 385
- Local educational agency: means a school district, a county office of education, a community college district, or a school district acting on behalf of one or more schools within the school district. See California Education Code 8205
- maintenance: includes any of the following:

- Manufacturer: means any person who makes, and places into the stream of commerce, a product. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- Medical malpractice mutual insurer: means a mutual insurer organized under this chapter that writes predominantly medical malpractice insurance, as that class of insurance is defined in subdivision (d) of Section 108. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Member: means a person who, by the records of the mutual company and by its articles of incorporation or bylaws, is deemed to be a holder of a membership interest in the mutual company. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Membership interests: means the interests of members arising under this code and the articles of incorporation and bylaws of the mutual company or otherwise by law. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Mobilehome: is a structure as defined in §. See California Vehicle Code 396
- Mortgage: The written agreement pledging property to a creditor as collateral for a loan.
- Mortgage: includes a trust deed, "mortgagor" includes a trustor under such trust deed, "mortgagee" includes a beneficiary under such trust deed, or a trustee exercising powers or performing duties granted to or imposed upon him thereunder, and "lien" in respect to real or personal property includes a charge or incumbrance arising out of a trust deed. - Mortgagee: The person to whom property is mortgaged and who has loaned the money.
- Mortgagor: The person who pledges property to a creditor as collateral for a loan and who receives the money.
- motor vehicle: includes a recreational vehicle as that term is defined in subdivision (a) of §. See California Vehicle Code 415
- motortruck: is a motor vehicle designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property. See California Vehicle Code 410
- Mutual company: means , in the case of a plan of conversion, the medical malpractice mutual insurer or mutual holding company that is converting pursuant to the plan. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Mutual holding company: means a corporation organized under the laws of this state subject to the general corporation law as set forth in the Corporations Code. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Mutual insurer: means , in the case of a plan of conversion under this article, the medical malpractice mutual insurer that is converting pursuant to the plan. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- National Bank: A bank that is subject to the supervision of the Comptroller of the Currency. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is a bureau of the U.S. Treasury Department. A national bank can be recognized because it must have "national" or "national association" in its name. Source: OCC
- New motor vehicle dealer: is a dealer, as defined in Section 285, who, in addition to the requirements of that section, either acquires for resale new and unregistered motor vehicles from manufacturers or distributors of those motor vehicles or acquires for resale new off-highway motorcycles, or all-terrain vehicles from manufacturers or distributors of the vehicles. See California Vehicle Code 426
- Nolo contendere: No contest-has the same effect as a plea of guilty, as far as the criminal sentence is concerned, but may not be considered as an admission of guilt for any other purpose.
- Notice: includes all papers and orders required to be served in any proceedings before any court, board, or officer, or when required by law to be served independently of such proceeding. See California Government Code 26660
- Oath: A promise to tell the truth.
- Oath: includes affirmation. See California Insurance Code 17
- Optical products: means prescription and nonprescription eyewear. See California Business and Professions Code 9855
- Oral argument: An opportunity for lawyers to summarize their position before the court and also to answer the judges' questions.
- owner: is a person having all the incidents of ownership, including the legal title of a vehicle whether or not such person lends, rents, or creates a security interest in the vehicle. See California Vehicle Code 460
- owner of land: means all of the following:

- Ownership or management: means the ownership or management of a subdivision, cooperative, or condominium for mobilehomes, or of a resident-owned mobilehome park. See California Civil Code 799
- Parent: means a biological parent, stepparent, adoptive parent, foster parent, caretaker relative, or any other adult living with a child who has responsibility for the care and welfare of the child. See California Education Code 8205
- Party: means a political party or organization that has qualified for participation in any primary or presidential general election. See California Elections Code 338
- Pedestrian: includes a person who is operating a self-propelled wheelchair, motorized tricycle, or motorized quadricycle and, by reason of physical disability, is otherwise unable to move about as a pedestrian, as specified in subdivision (a). See California Vehicle Code 467
- Person: includes a firm, partnership, association, limited liability company, or corporation. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Person: means a natural person, firm, corporation, limited liability company, or association, or an employee or agent thereof. See California Health and Safety Code 108042

- plan: means a plan adopted by a mutual company in compliance with this article. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Plea: In a criminal case, the defendant's statement pleading "guilty" or "not guilty" in answer to the charges, a declaration made in open court.
- Policy: means an individual or group policy of insurance issued by a mutual insurer or a converted insurer. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Policyholder: means the holder of a policy other than a reinsurance contract. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Precedent: A court decision in an earlier case with facts and law similar to a dispute currently before a court. Precedent will ordinarily govern the decision of a later similar case, unless a party can show that it was wrongly decided or that it differed in some significant way.
- Precinct: means a geographical area within a county that is made up of voters and is formed pursuant to Chapter 3 (commencing with Section 12200) of Division 12. See California Elections Code 338.6
- Process: signifies a writ or summons issued in the course of a judicial proceeding. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
- Product: means any article, or component part thereof, produced or distributed (1) for sale to a consumer for use in or around a permanent or temporary household or residence, a school, in recreation, or otherwise, or (2) for personal use, consumption, or enjoyment of a consumer in or around a permanent or temporary household or residence, a school, in recreation, or otherwise. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- Program: means the Children's Hospital Program established pursuant to this part. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.82
- Project: means constructing, expanding, remodeling, renovating, furnishing, equipping, financing, or refinancing of a children's hospital to be financed or refinanced with funds provided in whole or in part pursuant to this part. See California Health and Safety Code 1179.82
- Property: includes both personal and real property. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
- Public accountants: means certified public accountants, or state licensed public accountants. See California Education Code 8335
- Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
- Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land.
- Recall: includes a voluntary recall where a product is returned to the manufacturer for repair or replacement, usually due to defects or safety concerns, or public notice that a product is defective and must be returned to the manufacturer or retailer. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- Regents of the University of California: means any of the following:

- remanufacturer: is a ny person who for commission, money, or other thing of value, produces a vehicle that consists of any used or reconditioned integral parts, including, but not limited to, frame, engine, transmission, axles, brakes, or suspension which is subject to registration under this code. See California Vehicle Code 507.8
- Reporter: Makes a record of court proceedings and prepares a transcript, and also publishes the court's opinions or decisions (in the courts of appeals).
- representative: is a ny person regularly employed by a manufacturer or distributor for the purpose of negotiating or promoting the sale of the manufacturer's or distributer's vehicles to their franchisees or for regularly supervising or contacting franchisees or prospective franchisees in this state for any purpose. See California Vehicle Code 512
- Resident: means a person who maintains a residence in a subdivision, cooperative, or condominium for mobilehomes, or a resident-owned mobilehome park. See California Civil Code 799
- Resident-owned mobilehome park: means any entity other than a subdivision, cooperative, or condominium for mobilehomes, through which the residents have an ownership interest in the mobilehome park. See California Civil Code 799
- Restitution: The court-ordered payment of money by the defendant to the victim for damages caused by the criminal action.
- Retailer: means any person other than a manufacturer, distributor, or wholesaler who sells, distributes, sublets, or leases consumer goods of any kind. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- Revenue: as used in this chapter shall mean all fees, rates, charges, rentals or other income and revenue actually received or receivable by or for the account of the board from the operation of any particular project including without limiting the generality of the foregoing interest allowed on any moneys or securities and any proceeds derived from the sale of any securities and any consideration in any way derived from the particular project owned, operated or maintained by the board. See California Government Code 26487
- Ridesharing: means two or more persons traveling by any mode, including, but not limited to, carpooling, vanpooling, buspooling, taxipooling, jitney, and public transit. See California Vehicle Code 522
- Rights in surplus: includes rights of members of the insurer to a distribution of surplus in liquidation, conservation or demutualization of the insurer under this code, or in a dissolution or winding up. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Road: means any existing vehicle route established before January 1, 1979, with significant evidence of prior regular travel by vehicles subject to registration pursuant to Article 1 (commencing with Section 4000) of Chapter 1 of Division 3. See California Vehicle Code 527
- Rotator: when used in connection with an antenna installation or repair, includes, but is not limited to, an electromechanical device operated from a remote location to rotate an antenna on a horizontal plane. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- sale: means a transfer for consideration of title or of the right to use, by lease or sales contract, including, but not limited to, transactions conducted through sales outlets, catalogs, or the Internet or any other similar electronic means. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- seller: means a person who sells or offers to sell a service contract to a service contractholder, including a person who is the obligor under a service contract sold by the seller, manufacturer, or repairer of the product covered by the service contract. See California Business and Professions Code 9855
- semitrailer: is a vehicle designed for carrying persons or property, used in conjunction with a motor vehicle, and so constructed that some part of its weight and that of its load rests upon, or is carried by, another vehicle. See California Vehicle Code 550
- Service contract: means a contract in writing to perform, over a fixed period of time or for a specified duration, services relating to the maintenance, replacement, or repair of consumer goods and may include provisions for incidental payment of indemnity under limited circumstances, including, but not limited to, power surges, food spoilage, or accidental damage from handling. See California Business and Professions Code 9855
- Service contract reimbursement insurance policy: means a policy of insurance issued by an insurer admitted to do business in this state providing coverage for all obligations and liabilities incurred by a service contract seller under the terms of the service contracts sold in this state by the service contract seller to a service contractholder. See California Business and Professions Code 9855
- Service contractholder: means a person who purchases or receives a service contract from a service contract seller. See California Business and Professions Code 9855
- Service contractor: means a service contract administrator or a service contract seller. See California Business and Professions Code 9855
- Service dealer: means a person who, for compensation, engages in, or holds themselves out to the public as offering services in the business of:

- Site supervisor: means a person who, regardless of their title, has operational program responsibility for an early childhood program at a single site. See California Education Code 8205
- Sole ownership: The type of property ownership in which one individual holds legal title to the property and has full control of it.
- Startup costs: means those expenses an agency incurs in the process of opening a new or additional facility before the full enrollment of children. See California Education Code 8205
- State: includes the District of Columbia and the territories when applied to the different parts of the United States, and the words "United States" may include the district and territories. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Government Code 18
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Health and Safety Code 23
- State highway: means any highway which is acquired, laid out, constructed, improved or maintained as a State highway pursuant to constitutional or legislative authorization. See California Streets and Highways Code 24
- Statute of limitations: A law that sets the time within which parties must take action to enforce their rights.
- Stock holding company: means a corporation authorized to issue one or more classes of capital stock, the corporate purposes of which include holding all of the voting stock in an insurer that has been converted from a mutual insurer to a stock insurer in proceedings under Section 4097. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- Subdivision: means a subdivision of the section in which the term occurs unless some other section is expressly mentioned. See California Government Code 10
- Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
- Subpoena duces tecum: A command to a witness to produce documents.
- subscription: includes mark when the signer or subscriber can not write, such signer's or subscriber's name being written near the mark by a witness who writes his own name near the signer's or subscriber's name. See California Insurance Code 18

- Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.
- Support services: means those services that, when combined with preschool services, help promote the healthy physical, mental, social, and emotional growth of children. See California Education Code 8205
- Teacher: means a person with the appropriate permit issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing who provides program supervision and instruction that includes supervision of a number of aides, volunteers, and groups of children. See California Education Code 8205
- Temporary restraining order: Prohibits a person from an action that is likely to cause irreparable harm. This differs from an injunction in that it may be granted immediately, without notice to the opposing party, and without a hearing. It is intended to last only until a hearing can be held.
- Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
- Three-year-old children: means children who will have their third birthday on or before December 1 of the fiscal year in which they are enrolled in a California state preschool program. See California Education Code 8205
- Tort: A civil wrong or breach of a duty to another person, as outlined by law. A very common tort is negligent operation of a motor vehicle that results in property damage and personal injury in an automobile accident.
- tow truck: is a motor vehicle which has been altered or designed and equipped for, and primarily used in the business of, transporting vehicles by means of a crane, hoist, tow bar, tow line, or dolly or is otherwise primarily used to render assistance to other vehicles. See California Vehicle Code 615
- Toxic household product: means any substance or mixture of substances that are customarily produced or distributed for sale for use in or about the household, or are customarily stored by individuals in or about the household, and the substance or mixture of substances have the capacity to produce significant personal injury or illness to humans when orally ingested in moderate amounts. See California Health and Safety Code 108755
- traffic: includes pedestrians, ridden animals, vehicles, street cars, and other conveyances, either singly or together, while using any highway for purposes of travel. See California Vehicle Code 620
- trailer: includes a semitrailer when used in conjunction with an auxiliary dolly, if the auxiliary dolly is of a type constructed to replace the function of the drawbar and the front axle or axles of a trailer. See California Vehicle Code 630
- trailer coach: is a vehicle, other than a motor vehicle, designed for human habitation or human occupancy for industrial, professional, or commercial purposes, for carrying property on its own structure, and for being drawn by a motor vehicle. See California Vehicle Code 635
- Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
- transit bus: is a ny bus owned or operated by a publicly owned or operated transit system, or operated under contract with a publicly owned or operated transit system, and used to provide to the general public, regularly scheduled transportation for which a fare is charged. See California Vehicle Code 642
- transporter: is a person engaged in the business of moving any owned or lawfully possessed vehicle by lawful methods over the highways for the purpose of delivery of such vehicles to dealers, sales agents of a manufacturer, purchasers, or to a new location as requested by the owner. See California Vehicle Code 645
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
- truck tractor: is a motor vehicle designed and used primarily for drawing other vehicles and not so constructed as to carry a load, other than a part of the weight of the vehicle and the load so drawn. See California Vehicle Code 655
- trustees: means the Trustees of the California State University, created under Section 66600. See California Education Code 89000
- Uphold: The decision of an appellate court not to reverse a lower court decision.
- vehicle: is a device by which any person or property may be propelled, moved, or drawn upon a highway, excepting a device moved exclusively by human power or used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks. See California Vehicle Code 670
- Vehicle manufacturer: is a ny person who produces from raw materials or new basic components a vehicle of a type subject to registration under this code, off-highway motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles subject to identification under this code, or trailers subject to identification pursuant to Section 5014. See California Vehicle Code 672
- Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
- Video game: includes , but is not limited to, any electronic amusement device that utilizes a computer, microprocessor, or similar electronic circuitry. See California Business and Professions Code 9801
- Voter: means a voter as defined by §. See California Government Code 25210.2
- Voting stock: means securities of any class or any ownership interest having voting power for the election of directors, trustees, or management of a person, other than securities having voting power only because of the occurrence of a contingency. See California Insurance Code 4097.01
- wholesaler: means any person, other than a manufacturer or retailer, who sells or resells, or otherwise places into the stream of commerce, a product. See California Health and Safety Code 108042
- Will: includes codicil. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
- Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
- Writing: includes printing and typewriting. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
- Writing: includes any form of recorded message capable of comprehension by ordinary visual means. See California Financial Code 8
- Zone: means a zone formed pursuant to Article 8 (commencing with Section 25217). See California Government Code 25210.2
