- Authority: means the Monterey County Special Health Care Authority. See California Health and Safety Code 101560
- Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
- Board: means the Monterey County Special Health Care Authority Board. See California Health and Safety Code 101560
- center: means the California Habeas Corpus Resource Center, and "board" means the board of directors of the center. See California Government Code 68660
- Cohort population: means the number of students that began a program on a cohort start date. See California Education Code 94928
- Cohort start date: means the first class day after the cancellation period during which a cohort of students attends class for a specific program. See California Education Code 94928
- community advisory board: means that advisory board to the authority's board appointed by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors which is comprised of 15 persons who represent community and consumer interests and who do not directly earn their income from the provision of medical or health services. See California Health and Safety Code 101560
- Construction: means any one or more of the following: preliminary planning to determine the feasibility of treatment works, engineering, architectural, legal, fiscal, or economic investigations or studies, surveys, designs, plans, working drawings, specifications, procedures, or other necessary actions, erection, building, acquisition, alteration, remodeling, improvement, or extension of treatment works, or the inspection or supervision of any of the foregoing items. See California Water Code 13959
- County: includes city and county. See California Family Code 67
- County: means the County of Monterey. See California Health and Safety Code 101560
- creditor: means the state or the department or agency of the state seeking to collect the liability. See California Code of Civil Procedure 688.040
- debtor: means the debtor from whom the liability is sought to be collected. See California Code of Civil Procedure 688.040
- Department: means the Department of Motor Vehicles except, when used in Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 2100) of Division 2 and in Divisions 11 (commencing with Section 21000), 12 (commencing with Section 24000), 13 (commencing with Section 29000), 14 (commencing with Section 31600), 14. See California Vehicle Code 290
- Department: means the Department of Food and Agriculture. See California Food and Agricultural Code 32
- Diesel fuel: means any hydrocarbon oil meant for combustion in compression-ignition engines offered for sale that meets the standards for diesel fuel prescribed by this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Engine fuel: means any gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel used for the generation of power in an internal combustion engine or fuel cell in a motor vehicle, or electrical power delivered conductively or inductively to an electric motor in electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Executive session: A portion of the Senate's daily session in which it considers executive business.
- Federal assistance: means funds available to a municipality either directly or through allocation by the state, from the federal government as grants for construction of treatment works, pursuant to Title II of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, and acts amendatory thereof or supplementary thereto. See California Water Code 13959
- Fee simple: Absolute title to property with no limitations or restrictions regarding the person who may inherit it.
- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.
- Fuel oil: means any product offered for sale that is burned in a furnace or boiler for the generation of heat and meets the standards prescribed for fuel oil by this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Gasoline: means a volatile mixture of liquid hydrocarbons, generally containing small amounts of additives, suitable for use as a fuel in a spark-ignition internal combustion engine. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Graduates available for employment: means the number of graduates minus the number of graduates unavailable for employment. See California Education Code 94928
- Graduates employed in the field: means graduates who are gainfully employed in a single position for which the institution represents the program prepares its graduates, beginning within six months after a student completes the applicable educational program. See California Education Code 94928
- Graduates unavailable for employment: means graduates who, after graduation, die, become incarcerated, are called to active military duty, are international students that leave the United States or do not have a visa allowing employment in the United States, or are continuing their education at an accredited or bureau-approved postsecondary institution. See California Education Code 94928
- Habeas corpus: A writ that is usually used to bring a prisoner before the court to determine the legality of his imprisonment. It may also be used to bring a person in custody before the court to give testimony, or to be prosecuted.
- Highway: is a way or place of whatever nature, publicly maintained and open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel. See California Vehicle Code 360
- Kerosene: means a fuel offered for sale that meets the standards for kerosene prescribed in this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- License: as used in this chapter also includes a "permit". See California Business and Professions Code 18631
- local agency: means county, city, regional park district, school district, community college district, or any other municipal or public corporation or district. See California Government Code 53820
- Lubricant: means a lubricating oil or other substance that reduces friction and wear between moving parts within an engine and other motor vehicle components. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Lubricating oil: means motor oil, engine lubricant, engine oil, lubricating axle oil, gear oil, or manual transmission fluid. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Manufacturer: means manufacturer, refiner, producer, or importer. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- month: means a calendar month, unless otherwise expressed. See California Civil Code 14
- Motor oil: means an oil that reduces friction and wear between the moving parts within an internal combustion engine and also serves as a coolant. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Motor vehicle fuel: means "engine fuel" when that term is used in this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Nonresident: means a person who is not a resident of this State at the time the accident or collision occurs or at the time a cause of action or claim for relief arises against him, and also means a person who, at the time the accident or collision occurs or at the time a cause of action or claim for relief arises against him is a resident of this State but subsequently becomes a nonresident of this State. See California Harbors and Navigation Code 600
- On-time graduates: means the number of students who complete a program within 100 percent of the published program length. See California Education Code 94928
- order: include a decree, as appropriate under the circumstances. See California Family Code 100
- Person: includes a natural person, firm, association, organization, partnership, business trust, corporation, limited liability company, or public entity. See California Family Code 105
- Person: means any person, firm, association, organization, partnership, limited liability company, business trust, corporation, or company. See California Harbors and Navigation Code 19
- Pleadings: Written statements of the parties in a civil case of their positions. In the federal courts, the principal pleadings are the complaint and the answer.
- Pollution: means an alteration of the quality of the waters of the state by waste to a degree which unreasonably affects either of the following:

- Process: signifies a writ or summons issued in the course of a judicial proceeding. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
- professional advisory board: means that advisory board to the authority's board composed of nine health and medical care professionals appointed by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, five of whom shall be nominated by the Monterey County Medical Society, with at least one to be a member of the Monterey County Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, one of whom shall be nominated by Natividad Medical Center, one of whom shall be nominated by the Monterey County Hospital Administrators' Association, and two of whom shall be nominated by other organizations in the County of Monterey representing other professional health care providers. See California Health and Safety Code 101560
- property: includes property real and personal. See California Civil Code 14
- Public agency: means the United States, the State of California, any political subdivision, county, municipality, district, or agency of the State of California or of the United States and any department, bureau, or commission of the State of California or of the United States. See California Health and Safety Code 101560
- Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.
- Renewable diesel fuel: means a diesel fuel derived from nonpetroleum renewable resources. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- returned: means presented to the appropriate person in person, or postmarked, before the expiration of the specified time period. See California Family Code 359
- Sell: includes offer for sale, expose for sale, possess for sale, exchange, barter, or trade. See California Food and Agricultural Code 44
- Sheriff: includes marshal. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
- State: means a state of the United States, the District of Columbia, or a commonwealth, territory, or insular possession subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. See California Family Code 145
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Harbors and Navigation Code 20
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Public Utilities Code 17
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Water Code 18
- State board: means the State Water Resources Control Board. See California Water Code 13050
- Students available for graduation: means the cohort population minus the number of students unavailable for graduation. See California Education Code 94928
- Students unavailable for graduation: means students who have died, been incarcerated, or called to active military duty. See California Education Code 94928
- Subdivision: means a subdivision of the section in which that term occurs unless some other section is expressly mentioned. See California Public Utilities Code 10
- subscription: includes mark when the signer or subscriber cannot write, such signer's or subscriber's name being written near the mark by a witness who writes his own name near the signer's or subscriber's name. See California Vehicle Code 17
- United States: means the United States of America, and in relation to any particular matter includes the officers, agents, employees, agencies, or instrumentalities authorized to act in relation thereto. See California Water Code 20
- Waste: includes sewage and any and all other waste substances, liquid, solid, gaseous, or radioactive, associated with human habitation, or of human or animal origin, or from any producing, manufacturing, or processing operation, including waste placed within containers of whatever nature prior to, and for purposes of, disposal. See California Water Code 13050
- Waters of the state: means any surface water or groundwater, including saline waters, within the boundaries of the state. See California Water Code 13050
- will: includes codicil. See California Civil Code 14
- Writ: means an order or precept in writing, issued in the name of the people, or of a court or judicial officer. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
