- Advertising medium: includes banner, sign, placard, poster, streamer, and card. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Advice and consent: Under the Constitution, presidential nominations for executive and judicial posts take effect only when confirmed by the Senate, and international treaties become effective only when the Senate approves them by a two-thirds vote.
- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- assessed value: means 25 percent of full value to, and including, the 1980-81 fiscal year, and 100 percent of full value for the 1981-82 fiscal year and fiscal years thereafter. See California Government Code 25
- Authority: means the Santa Barbara San Luis Obispo Regional Health Authority. See California Health and Safety Code 101685
- Automotive spark-ignition engine fuel: means a product used for the generation of power in a spark-ignition internal combustion engine. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
- Bequest: Property gifted by will.
- Board: means the State Water Resources Control Board. See California Water Code 13999.2
- Board: means the Santa Barbara San Luis Obispo Regional Health Authority Board of Directors. See California Health and Safety Code 101685
- Bureau: refers to the Bureau of Household Goods and Services, as established in Section 9810. See California Business and Professions Code 19225.5
- Chambers: A judge's office.
- Codicil: An addition, change, or supplement to a will executed with the same formalities required for the will itself.
- Committee: means the Clean Water Finance Committee created by Section 13999. See California Water Code 13999.2
- Community advisory boards: means advisory boards to the authority's board appointed by the board of directors of the authority which shall consist of persons who represent community and consumer interests and who do not directly earn their income from the provision of medical health services. See California Health and Safety Code 101685
- Compression-ignition engine fuel: means a product used for the generation of power in a compression-ignition internal combustion engine. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Contamination: includes any equivalent effect resulting from the disposal of waste, whether or not waters of the state are affected. See California Water Code 13050
- Corporation: includes a corporation, a company, a limited liability company, an association, and a joint stock association. See California Business and Professions Code 19225.5
- County: includes city and county. See California Water Code 14
- Date of separation: means the date that a complete and final break in the marital relationship has occurred, as evidenced by both of the following:

- Department: means the Department of Water Resources. See California Water Code 13999.2
- Department: means the Department of Food and Agriculture. See California Food and Agricultural Code 32
- Deposition: An oral statement made before an officer authorized by law to administer oaths. Such statements are often taken to examine potential witnesses, to obtain discovery, or to be used later in trial.
- Devise: To gift property by will.
- Diesel fuel: means any hydrocarbon oil meant for combustion in compression-ignition engines offered for sale that meets the standards for diesel fuel prescribed by this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Digital signature: means an electronic identifier, created by computer, intended by the party using it to have the same force and effect as the use of a manual signature. See California Government Code 16.5
- Director: means "State Director of Health Services. See California Health and Safety Code 21
- Engine fuel: means any gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel used for the generation of power in an internal combustion engine or fuel cell in a motor vehicle, or electrical power delivered conductively or inductively to an electric motor in electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Escrow: Money given to a third party to be held for payment until certain conditions are met.
- Fair market value: The price at which an asset would change hands in a transaction between a willing, informed buyer and a willing, informed seller.
- Fiduciary: A trustee, executor, or administrator.
- Fuel oil: means any product offered for sale that is burned in a furnace or boiler for the generation of heat and meets the standards prescribed for fuel oil by this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Fund: means the 1984 State Clean Water Bond Fund. See California Water Code 13999.2
- garbage: means any waste which consists in whole or in part of any animal waste that results from the handling, preparing, cooking, and consuming of food, including the offal from any animal carcass or from any part of an animal carcass. See California Food and Agricultural Code 10901
- Gasoline: means a volatile mixture of liquid hydrocarbons, generally containing small amounts of additives, suitable for use as a fuel in a spark-ignition internal combustion engine. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Gasoline-oxygenate blend: means a fuel consisting primarily of gasoline along with a substantial amount of one or more oxygenates that meets ASTM International Standard D4814. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- Hazardous substance: means either of the following:

- Health care system: means any system established to arrange for the provision of medical services. See California Health and Safety Code 101685
- Household mover: includes every corporation or person, their lessees, trustee, receivers, or trustees appointed by any court whatsoever, engaged in the permitted or unpermitted transportation for compensation or hire as a business by means of a motor vehicle or motor vehicles being used in the transportation of used household goods and personal effects over any public highway in this state. See California Business and Professions Code 19225.5
- Kerosene: means a fuel offered for sale that meets the standards for kerosene prescribed in this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Legacy: A gift of property made by will.
- Legatee: A beneficiary of a decedent
- Life estate: A property interest limited in duration to the life of the individual holding the interest (life tenant).
- Lubricant: means a lubricating oil or other substance that reduces friction and wear between moving parts within an engine and other motor vehicle components. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Lubricating oil: means motor oil, engine lubricant, engine oil, lubricating axle oil, gear oil, or manual transmission fluid. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Manufacturer: means manufacturer, refiner, producer, or importer. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Mining waste: means all solid, semisolid, and liquid waste materials from the extraction, beneficiation, and processing of ores and minerals. See California Water Code 13050
- Motor oil: means an oil that reduces friction and wear between the moving parts within an internal combustion engine and also serves as a coolant. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- motor oil: means any product used to lubricate the moving parts of an internal combustion engine. See California Business and Professions Code 13430
- motor oil dealer: means any person, firm, or corporation engaged in the business of producing, packaging, or otherwise preparing motor oil for market, or selling or distributing motor oil. See California Business and Professions Code 13430
- Motor vehicle fuel: means "engine fuel" when that term is used in this chapter. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- Nuisance: means anything which meets all of the following requirements:

- Nutrition education: means a planned sequential instructional program that provides knowledge and teaches skills to help pupils adopt and maintain lifelong, healthy eating patterns. See California Education Code 8996
- Oath: A promise to tell the truth.
- Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
- Person: includes a natural person, firm, association, organization, partnership, business trust, corporation, limited liability company, or public entity. See California Family Code 105
- Person: means any individual, firm, partnership, association, corporation, limited liability company, trust, business trust, or the receiver or trustee or conservator for any of the above, but does not include a public agency. See California Health and Safety Code 101685
- Person: includes an individual, a firm, or a partnership. See California Business and Professions Code 19225.5
- Plaintiff: The person who files the complaint in a civil lawsuit.
- Pollution: means an alteration of the quality of the waters of the state by waste to a degree which unreasonably affects either of the following:

- Proceeding: includes an action. See California Family Code 110
- property: includes property real and personal. See California Civil Code 14
- Property: includes real and personal property and any interest therein. See California Family Code 113
- Public agency: means the United States, the State of California, any political subdivision, county, municipality, district, or agency of the State of California or of the United States and any department, bureau, or commission of the State of California or of the United States. See California Health and Safety Code 101685
- Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
- Recycled water: means water which, as a result of treatment of waste, is suitable for a direct beneficial use or a controlled use that would not otherwise occur and is therefor considered a valuable resource. See California Water Code 13050
- Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
- Reporter: Makes a record of court proceedings and prepares a transcript, and also publishes the court's opinions or decisions (in the courts of appeals).
- Secretary: means the Secretary of Food and Agriculture. See California Food and Agricultural Code 35
- Service area: means Santa Barbara County, and those counties that are contiguous with Santa Barbara County. See California Health and Safety Code 101685
- Spouse: includes "registered domestic partner" as required by Section 297. See California Family Code 143
- Standard test: means a test conducted in accordance with the latest published standard adopted by ASTM International. See California Business and Professions Code 13400
- State: means a state of the United States, the District of Columbia, or a commonwealth, territory, or insular possession subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. See California Family Code 145
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Public Utilities Code 17
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Water Code 18
- Subdivision: means a subdivision of the section in which that term occurs unless some other section is expressly mentioned. See California Water Code 10
- subscription: includes mark when the signer or subscriber cannot write, such signer's or subscriber's name being written near the mark by a witness who writes his own name near the signer's or subscriber's name. See California Public Utilities Code 16
- Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.
- United States: means the United States of America, and in relation to any particular matter includes the officers, agents, employees, agencies, or instrumentalities authorized to act in relation thereto. See California Water Code 20
- Variable Rate: Having a "variable" rate means that the APR changes from time to time based on fluctuations in an external rate, normally the Prime Rate. This external rate is known as the "index." If the index changes, the variable rate normally changes. Also see Fixed Rate.
- Waste: includes sewage and any and all other waste substances, liquid, solid, gaseous, or radioactive, associated with human habitation, or of human or animal origin, or from any producing, manufacturing, or processing operation, including waste placed within containers of whatever nature prior to, and for purposes of, disposal. See California Water Code 13050
- Water quality control: means the regulation of any activity or factor which may affect the quality of the waters of the state and includes the prevention and correction of water pollution and nuisance. See California Water Code 13050
- Water quality objectives: means the limits or levels of water quality constituents or characteristics which are established for the reasonable protection of beneficial uses of water or the prevention of nuisance within a specific area. See California Water Code 13050
- Waters of the state: means any surface water or groundwater, including saline waters, within the boundaries of the state. See California Water Code 13050
- will: includes codicil. See California Civil Code 14
- Will: includes codicil. See California Code of Civil Procedure 17
