Subject to the limitations provided in this chapter, a claimant may file with the Controller, pursuant to Article 3 (commencing with Section 20621) of this chapter, a claim for postponement from the State of California of a sum equal to, but not exceeding, the amount of property taxes, as defined in Section 20584, due on the residential dwelling for the fiscal year for which the claim is made.

Terms Used In California Revenue and Taxation Code 20601
- Controller: means the State Controller. See California Revenue and Taxation Code 21
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- Residential dwelling: means a dwelling occupied as the principal place of residence of the claimant and so much of the land surrounding it as is reasonably necessary for use of the dwelling as a home, owned by the claimant, the claimant and spouse, or by the claimant and either another individual eligible for postponement under this chapter or an individual described in subdivision (a), (b), or (c) of Section 20511 and located in this state.
