Connecticut General Statutes 14-44d – Information on commercial driver’s license. Classifications
(a) A commercial driver’s license shall be marked “Commercial Driver‘s License” or “CDL”, and shall be, to the maximum extent practicable, tamper proof. It shall include, at a minimum, the following items of information:

- Drive: means to drive, operate or be in physical control of a motor vehicle, including a motor vehicle being towed by another. See Connecticut General Statutes 14-1
- Driver: means any person who drives, operates or is in physical control of a commercial motor vehicle, or who is required to hold a commercial driver's license. See Connecticut General Statutes 14-1
- GVWR: means the value specified by the manufacturer as the maximum loaded weight of a single or a combination (articulated) vehicle. See Connecticut General Statutes 14-1
- Person: includes any individual, corporation, limited liability company, association, copartnership, company, firm, business trust or other aggregation of individuals but does not include the state or any political subdivision thereof, unless the context clearly states or requires. See Connecticut General Statutes 14-1
- State: means any state of the United States and the District of Columbia unless the context indicates a more specific reference to the state of Connecticut. See Connecticut General Statutes 14-1
- Vehicle: includes any device suitable for the conveyance, drawing or other transportation of persons or property, whether operated on wheels, runners, a cushion of air or by any other means. See Connecticut General Statutes 14-1
(1) The name and residence address of the person;
(2) The person’s color picture;
(3) A physical description of the person, including sex, height and eye color;
(4) Date of birth;
(5) The person’s signature;
(6) The class or type of commercial motor vehicle or vehicles which the license authorizes the person to drive, together with any endorsements or restrictions;
(7) The name of this state; and
(8) The dates between which the license is valid.
(b) A commercial driver’s license shall be issued with the following classifications:
(1) Class A -Any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of twenty-six thousand one pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle being towed is in excess of ten thousand pounds.
(2) Class B -Any single vehicle with a GVWR of twenty-six thousand one pounds or more, and any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of ten thousand pounds.
(3) Class C -Any single vehicle with a GVWR of less than twenty-six thousand one pounds or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR not in excess of ten thousand pounds comprising:
(A) Vehicles designed to transport sixteen or more passengers, including the driver, or designed to transport more than ten passengers, including the driver, and used to transport students under the age of twenty-one years to and from school; and
(B) Vehicles used to transport hazardous materials which are required to be placarded in accordance with 49 C.F.R. § part 172, Subpart F, as amended.
Any vehicle that requires an endorsement, in accordance with the provisions of this section and section 14-36a, shall not be driven unless the proper endorsement appears on the license.
