- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Applicant: means an individual applying for a position with a public employer. See Idaho Code 65-502
- Armed forces: means the army, navy, marine corps, coast guard, air force, and the reserve components thereof. See Idaho Code 65-502
- Civil service position: means a position for which the public employee is selected from a pool of applicants through a competitive examination, a merit system or any other rating system based on experience and qualifications. See Idaho Code 65-502
- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- Disabled veteran: means those veterans separated under honorable conditions who:

Source: Honorable conditions: means an honorable discharge or a general discharge "under honorable conditions. See Idaho Code 65-502 Initial appointment: means the first time a qualified veteran is hired by a county or a municipal government or the state, provided however, subsequent separation from the county, municipal government or the state shall not result in the award of new preference or preference points with that governmental entity. See Idaho Code 65-502 Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases. Key employee: means an individual specifically hired for an "at will" position that is not a civil service position and where:

See Idaho Code 65-502 Public employee: means any person holding a position in public employment. See Idaho Code 65-502 Service-connected disability: means that the veteran is disabled due to injury or illness that was incurred in or aggravated by military service as certified by the federal veterans administration or an agency of the department of defense. See Idaho Code 65-502 State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories; and the words "United States" may include the District of Columbia and territories.
