- Chief judge: The judge who has primary responsibility for the administration of a court but also decides cases; chief judges are determined by seniority.

Before entering upon the duties of his or her office, each probation officer shall take and subscribe to an oath before the Chief Judge of his or her circuit or his or her designee to support the constitution and laws of the United States and of the State of Illinois, and faithfully to perform the duties of his or her office.
