- Habeas corpus: A writ that is usually used to bring a prisoner before the court to determine the legality of his imprisonment. It may also be used to bring a person in custody before the court to give testimony, or to be prosecuted.
- Sheriff: means the sheriff of the county or another person authorized to perform sheriff's duties. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
Sec. 5. A sheriff or other officer shall not be liable to a civil action for obeying a writ of habeas corpus or an order of discharge made pursuant to a writ of habeas corpus.
