- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- appraised value: means the value of property without consideration of the effect, if any, of dedication or other preservation related restrictions. See Indiana Code 14-31-2-2
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- area: means an area of land, water, or both land and water, whether in public or private ownership, that meets one (1) or both of the following conditions:

- articles of dedication: means the writing by which an estate, an interest, or a right in an area is formally dedicated as permitted by section 14 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 14-31-1-3
- buy: includes the following:

- campaign: refers to the Indiana natural heritage protection campaign established by this chapter. See Indiana Code 14-31-2-3
- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- Devise: To gift property by will.
- division: refers to the division of nature preserves. See Indiana Code 14-31-2-4
- Fee simple: Absolute title to property with no limitations or restrictions regarding the person who may inherit it.
- fund: refers to the Indiana natural heritage protection fund established by this chapter. See Indiana Code 14-31-2-5
- Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
- ginseng: refers to American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L. See Indiana Code 14-31-3-2
- ginseng dealer: means a person who buys or sells ginseng roots from ginseng harvesters or other ginseng dealers for resale or exportation. See Indiana Code 14-31-3-3
- Grantor: The person who establishes a trust and places property into it.
- harvest season: means the season established by the commission under section 14(b)(1) of this chapter. See Indiana Code 14-31-3-4
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Legacy: A gift of property made by will.
- nature preserve: means an area in which an estate, an interest, or a right has been formally dedicated under this chapter. See Indiana Code 14-31-1-5
- Population: has the meaning set forth in Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Property: includes personal and real property. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- registry: refers to the Indiana natural areas registry:

- system: means the nature preserves held under this chapter. See Indiana Code 14-31-1-6
- trust I: refers to the Indiana natural heritage stewardship trust I authorized by this chapter. See Indiana Code 14-31-2-7
- trust II: refers to the Indiana natural heritage stewardship trust II authorized by this chapter. See Indiana Code 14-31-2-8
- Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
- United States: includes the District of Columbia and the commonwealths, possessions, states in free association with the United States, and the territories. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
