- braille: means a tactually perceived system of reading and writing known as Standard English braille. See Indiana Code 20-35-9-2
- case conference committee: means the group of individuals described in IC 20-18-2-9 who develop the individualized education program for each student with a disability (as defined in IC 20-35-1-8). See Indiana Code 20-35-9-3
- center: refers to the center for deaf and hard of hearing education established by IC 20-35-11-3. See Indiana Code 20-35-12-5
- center: refers to the center for deaf and hard of hearing education established under section 3 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 20-35-11-2
- commissioner: refers to the commissioner of the Indiana department of administration. See Indiana Code 4-13-1.1-2
- Conference committee: A temporary, ad hoc panel composed of conferees from both chamber of a legislature which is formed for the purpose of reconciling differences in legislation that has passed both chambers. Conference committees are usually convened to resolve bicameral differences on major and controversial legislation.
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- deaf or hard of hearing: has the meaning set forth in 511 IAC 7-41-4. See Indiana Code 20-35-13-2
- department: refers to the Indiana department of administration created under IC 4-13-1-2. See Indiana Code 4-13-1.1-3
- Devise: To gift property by will.
- Donor: The person who makes a gift.

- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- IDEA: refers to the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Indiana Code 20-35-14-1
- in writing: include printing, lithographing, or other mode of representing words and letters. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- individualized education program: has the meaning set forth in IC 20-18-2-9. See Indiana Code 20-35-9-4
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- language developmental milestones: means milestones of development aligned with applicable state standards. See Indiana Code 20-35-12-8
- Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
- Legacy: A gift of property made by will.
- office: has the meaning set forth in Indiana Code 20-35-14-2
- office of the secretary: refers to the office of the secretary of family and social services established by Indiana Code 20-35-12-9
- Population: has the meaning set forth in Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Property: includes personal and real property. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Reporter: Makes a record of court proceedings and prepares a transcript, and also publishes the court's opinions or decisions (in the courts of appeals).
- Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims.
- state agency: means an authority, board, branch, commission, committee, department, division, or other instrumentality of the executive, including the administrative, department of state government. See Indiana Code 4-13-1-1
- Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
- United States: includes the District of Columbia and the commonwealths, possessions, states in free association with the United States, and the territories. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
