Terms Used In Indiana Code > Title 2 > Article 7 > Chapter 1 - Definitions
- Agency: means any state administration, agency, authority, board, bureau, commission, committee, council, department, division, institution, office, service, or other similar body of state government. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-1
- agency: has the meaning set forth in IC 4-22-2-3. See Indiana Code 4-22-10-1
- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Bequest: Property gifted by will.
- Board: means the Indiana library and historical board established by IC 4-23-7-2. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-1
- board: refers to the coroners training board established by section 3 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 4-23-6.5-1
- board: refers to the Indiana recycling market development board created by this chapter;
Indiana Code 4-23-5.5-1
- Caucus: From the Algonquian Indian language, a caucus meant "to meet together." An informal organization of members of the legislature that exists to discuss issues of mutual concern and possibly to perform legislative research and policy planning for its members. There are regional, political or ideological, ethnic, and economic-based caucuses.
- commission: refers to the Indiana arts commission established by IC 4-23-2. See Indiana Code 4-23-2.5-2
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- covered document: means any document that:

- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- data exchange agreement: means an agreement concerning the exchange of any GIS data or framework data. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-1
- Department: means the Indiana library and historical department established by IC 4-23-7-1. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-1
- Director: means director of the Indiana state library. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-1
- division: refers to the division of pollution prevention established by IC 13-27-2-1; and
Indiana Code 4-23-5.5-1
- electronic map: has the meaning set forth in IC 5-14-3-2. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-2
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- framework data: means common electronic map information for a geographic area. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-3
- fund: refers to the Indiana mapping data and standards fund established by section 19 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-4
- fund: refers to the Indiana arts commission trust fund established by section 4 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 4-23-2.5-3
- fund: refers to the coroners training and continuing education fund established by section 8 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 4-23-6.5-2
- Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
- GIS: refers to geographic information systems. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-5
- Historical bureau: means the Indiana historical bureau established by Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-1
- IGIC: refers to the nonprofit entity known as the Indiana Geographic Information Council, or its successor organization. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-6
- in writing: include printing, lithographing, or other mode of representing words and letters. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Judgment: means all final orders, decrees, and determinations in an action and all orders upon which executions may issue. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
- Liabilities: The aggregate of all debts and other legal obligations of a particular person or legal entity.
- Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
- office: refers to the Indiana office of energy development established by IC 4-3-23-3. See Indiana Code 4-23-5.5-1
- Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
- plain writing: means writing that is clear, concise, and well-organized, and follows other best practices appropriate to the subject or field and intended audience. See Indiana Code 4-22-10-3
- political subdivision: has the meaning set forth in IC 36-1-2-13. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-7
- President pro tempore: A constitutionally recognized officer of the Senate who presides over the chamber in the absence of the Vice President. The President Pro Tempore (or, "president for a time") is elected by the Senate and is, by custom, the Senator of the majority party with the longest record of continuous service.
- Property: includes personal and real property. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Public library: has the meaning set forth in IC 36-12-1-5. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-1
- Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
- Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
- state agency: has the meaning set forth in IC 4-13-1-1. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-8
- state data center: refers to the state data center established under Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-9
- state GIS officer: refers to the individual appointed under section 13 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-10
- State library: means the Indiana state library established by IC 4-23-7-3. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-1
- statewide base map: means an electronic map of Indiana consisting of framework data for Indiana. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.3-11
- statewide data integration plan: means a plan:

- Statewide library card program: refers to the program established by section 5. See Indiana Code 4-23-7.1-1
- Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
- Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
- United States: includes the District of Columbia and the commonwealths, possessions, states in free association with the United States, and the territories. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- Veto: The procedure established under the Constitution by which the President/Governor refuses to approve a bill or joint resolution and thus prevents its enactment into law. A regular veto occurs when the President/Governor returns the legislation to the house in which it originated. The President/Governor usually returns a vetoed bill with a message indicating his reasons for rejecting the measure. In Congress, the veto can be overridden only by a two-thirds vote in both the Senate and the House.
- Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
