- act: refers to the federal Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000 (Indiana Code 4-23-29-1
- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Attorney: includes a counselor or other person authorized to appear and represent a party in an action or special proceeding. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- board: refers to the board for the coordination of programs serving vulnerable individuals created by section 8 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 4-23-30.2-1

- director: refers to the director of the board appointed under section 10 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 4-23-30.2-2
- disability: means a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one (1) or more major life activities. See Indiana Code 4-23-29-5
- disproportionality: refers to a situation in which members of a particular race or ethnic group in the United States are represented at a percentage higher or lower than the percentage of the general public that the particular race or ethnic group comprises. See Indiana Code 4-23-30.2-3
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.
- Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
