The department of health and human services, in conjunction with any statewide organ procurement organization in Iowa, shall prepare and submit a report to the general assembly on or before January 1 each year regarding organ donation rates and voluntary compliance efforts with hospital organ and tissue donation protocols by physicians, hospitals, and other health systems organizations. The report shall contain the following:
1. An evaluation of organ procurement efforts in the state, including statistics regarding organ and tissue donation activity as of September 30 of the preceding year.
Terms Used In Iowa Code 142C.17
- Department: means the department of inspections, appeals, and licensing. See Iowa Code 154A.1
- following: when used by way of reference to a chapter or other part of a statute mean the next preceding or next following chapter or other part. See Iowa Code 4.1
- Hospital: means a hospital licensed under chapter 135B, or a hospital licensed, accredited, or approved under federal law or the laws of any other state, and includes a hospital operated by the federal government, a state, or a political subdivision of a state, although not required to be licensed under state laws. See Iowa Code 142C.2
- Organ procurement organization: means a person designated by the United States secretary of health and human services as an organ procurement organization. See Iowa Code 142C.2
- Procurement organization: means an eye bank, organ procurement organization, or tissue bank. See Iowa Code 142C.2
- State: means a state, territory, or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. See Iowa Code 152E.3
- State: means any state of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands, or any territory or insular possession subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. See Iowa Code 142C.2
- Tissue: means a portion of the human body other than an organ or an eye, but does not include blood unless the blood is donated for the purpose of research or education. See Iowa Code 142C.2
- year: means twelve consecutive months. See Iowa Code 4.1
2. Efforts by any statewide organ procurement organization in Iowa, and related parties, to increase organ and tissue donation and consent rates.
3. Voluntary compliance efforts with hospital organ and tissue donation protocols by physicians, hospitals, and health systems organizations and the results of those efforts.
4. Annual contribution levels to the anatomical gift public awareness and transplantation fund created in section 142C.15, and any distributions made from the fund.
5. Efforts and ideas for increasing public awareness of the option of organ and tissue donation.
6. Additional information deemed relevant by the department in assessing the status and progress of organ and tissue donation efforts in the state.
