Terms Used In Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:463.222

  • Department: means the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, acting directly through its duly authorized officers and agents, or whatever state board, official, or body may hereafter be authorized by law to exercise the functions now devolving upon it under the law. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:451
  • Motor vehicle: means every vehicle, as herein defined, which is self propelled. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:451
  • Vehicle: means every device in, upon, or by which any person, property, or thing is or may be transported or drawn upon a public highway excepting devices moved by human power or used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks; provided, that for the purpose of this Chapter, a bicycle or a ridden animal shall not be deemed a vehicle, and provided further that a trailer or semitrailer shall be held and deemed each to be and constitute a separate vehicle. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:451

            A. The secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections shall establish a special prestige motor vehicle license plate to be known as the “University of Mississippi Alumni Association” plate, provided there are a minimum of one thousand applicants for the plate. The plate shall be restricted to use on passenger cars, pickup trucks, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, and vans.

            B. The secretary shall work in conjunction with the executive director of the University of Mississippi Alumni Association or his designee and the state senator for Senate District 18 to select the color and design of the plate, provided the design is in compliance with La. Rev. Stat. 47:463(A)(3).

            C. The special prestige license plate shall be issued, upon application, to any citizen of Louisiana in the same manner as any other motor vehicle license plate.

            D. The department shall collect an annual royalty fee of twenty-five dollars that shall be disbursed in accordance with Subsection E of this Section. This fee shall be in addition to the standard motor vehicle license tax imposed by La. Const. Art. VII, § 5 and a handling fee of three dollars and fifty cents for each plate to be retained by the department to offset a portion of administrative costs.

            E. The annual royalty fee shall be collected by the department and forwarded in equal disbursements to the University of Mississippi Alumni Association chapters in the state of Louisiana that are officially sanctioned by the University of Mississippi Alumni Association.

            F. The secretary shall promulgate and adopt rules and regulations as are necessary to implement the provisions of this Section.
