Terms Used In Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:1563
- Board: means the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:1561
- Certificate of approval: means a certificate issued by the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine to a registered equine dentist. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:1561
- person: includes a body of persons, whether incorporated or not. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 1:10
- practice of equine dentistry: means the rasping or floating of molar, premolar, and canine teeth of equines, and the removal of deciduous incisor and premolar teeth or caps of equines. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:1561
- Racetrack: means any facility which conducts races as defined in Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:1561
- Registered equine dentist: means a person registered by the board as being qualified to practice equine dentistry in Louisiana. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:1561
A. Except as provided in this Chapter, no person shall practice equine dentistry in Louisiana unless issued a certificate of approval by the board.
B. A registered equine dentist may practice equine dentistry at a racetrack in this state.
C.(1) A registered equine dentist who practices equine dentistry at a location in this state other than at a racetrack shall notify the horse owner’s veterinarian prior to the commencement of the practice of equine dentistry. In the event that the horse owner does not have a veterinarian, the equine dentist shall obtain a referral from a veterinarian licensed by the board.
(2) Prior to the initiation of an extraction of first premolar teeth or wolf teeth, the registered equine dentist shall also notify and obtain the approval of the equine owner’s veterinarian or referral veterinarian.
D. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, after complying with the provisions of La. Rev. Stat. 37:1562 and any rule or regulation promulgated by the board regarding the application process, fees, and defining the duties of an equine dentist, any person who was licensed as an equine dentist before July 1, 1995, and who desires to practice equine dentistry shall be issued a certificate of approval by the board and shall be registered as an equine dentist.
