Terms Used In Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:3253
- Board: means the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:3241
- Certified nurse midwife: means a nurse authorized by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing to practice as a certified nurse midwife in the state. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:3241
- Licensed midwife: means a person who has completed all requirements of Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:3241
- Licensed midwifery: means the provision of health services in pregnancy and childbirth by a person not a licensed physician or a certified nurse midwife. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:3241
- Physician: means a person who is currently practicing obstetrics and is licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in Louisiana. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:3241
- Supervision: means the coordination, direction, and continued evaluation at first hand of the person in training and obtaining clinical experience as an apprentice midwife within the scope of these provisions. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:3241
A. The board shall maintain and revise a list of approved courses, texts, and trainers for licensure under this Chapter. The board may use the list as a guideline in determining the acceptability of a nonlisted educational source which an applicant submits as complying with any educational experience requirement provided for in the board’s regulations.
B. Clinical experience in licensed midwifery may be obtained in any setting – office, clinic, hospital, maternity center, or home. The board shall provide by regulation for the required types and numbers of experiences. Apprentice midwives must obtain their clinical experience under the supervision of a physician, certified nurse midwife, or licensed midwife. This must be direct, present in the same room supervision.
