• Adult: means an individual with a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Louisiana Revised Statutes 13:4261.102
• Bail: Security given for the release of a criminal defendant or witness from legal custody (usually in the form of money) to secure his/her appearance on the day and time appointed.
• Bailee: means a person that by a warehouse receipt, bill of lading, or other document of title acknowledges possession of goods and contracts to deliver them. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Bailor: means a person that delivers possession of goods to a bailee. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Carrier: means a person that issues a bill of lading. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Chief judge: The judge who has primary responsibility for the administration of a court but also decides cases; chief judges are determined by seniority.
• Clerk of court: An officer appointed by the court to work with the chief judge in overseeing the court's administration, especially to assist in managing the flow of cases through the court and to maintain court records.
• Committee membership: Legislators are assigned to specific committees by their party. Seniority, regional balance, and political philosophy are the most prominent factors in the committee assignment process.
• Consignee: means a person named in a bill of lading to which or to whose order the bill promises delivery. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Consignor: means a person named in a bill of lading as the person from which the goods have been received for shipment. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Contract: includes any agreement conferring the rights and obligations of a timeshare ownership on the purchaser. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:1131.2
• Court reporter: A person who makes a word-for-word record of what is said in court and produces a transcript of the proceedings upon request.
• Creditable service: means prior service plus membership service for which credit is allowable as provided in this Chapter. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:403
• Delivery order: means a record that contains an order to deliver goods directed to a warehouse, carrier, or other person that in the ordinary course of business issues warehouse receipts or bills of lading. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Dependent: A person dependent for support upon another.
• Donor: The person who makes a gift.
• En banc: In the bench or "full bench." Refers to court sessions with the entire membership of a court participating rather than the usual quorum. U.S. courts of appeals usually sit in panels of three judges, but may expand to a larger number in certain cases. They are then said to be sitting en banc.
• Escheat: Reversion of real or personal property to the state when 1) a person dies without leaving a will and has no heirs, or 2) when the property (such as a bank account) has been inactive for a certain period of time. ^{Source: OCC}
• Escrow: Money given to a third party to be held for payment until certain conditions are met.
• Goods: means all things that are treated as movable for the purposes of a contract for storage or transportation. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Grand jury: agreement providing that a lender will delay exercising its rights (in the case of a mortgage,
• Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
• Guardian: means a guardian as defined by Louisiana Revised Statutes 13:4261.102
• Habeas corpus: A writ that is usually used to bring a prisoner before the court to determine the legality of his imprisonment. It may also be used to bring a person in custody before the court to give testimony, or to be prosecuted.
• Inter vivos: Transfer of property from one living person to another living person.
• Issuer: means a bailee that issues a document of title or, in the case of an unaccepted delivery order, the person that orders the possessor of goods to deliver. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Juror: A person who is on the jury.
• Legacy: A gift of property made by will.
• Legatee: A beneficiary of a decedent
• Lessee in ordinary course of business: means a person that becomes a lessee of goods in good faith, without knowledge that the lease violates the rights of another person in the goods, and in the ordinary course from a person, other than a pawnbroker, in the business of selling or leasing goods of that kind. • lien: means a privilege on movable property created by operation of law in favor of a creditor. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
• Minor child: means an unmarried child under the age of eighteen years or an unmarried student under the age of twenty-three years who is the issue of a marriage of a member of this system, the legally adopted child of a member of this system, a child born outside of marriage of a female member of this system, or the child of a male member of this system if acknowledged or filiated pursuant to the provisions of the Civil Code. • National Bank: A bank that is subject to the supervision of the Comptroller of the Currency. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is a bureau of the U.S. Treasury Department. A national bank can be recognized because it must have "national" or "national association" in its name. ^{Source: OCC}
• Petit jury: A group of citizens who hear the evidence presented by both sides at trial and determine the facts in dispute. Federal criminal juries consist of 12 persons. Federal civil juries consist of six persons.
• Plea: In a criminal case, the defendant's statement pleading "guilty" or "not guilty" in answer to the charges, a declaration made in open court.
• Pleadings: Written statements of the parties in a civil case of their positions. In the federal courts, the principal pleadings are the complaint and the answer.
• Power of attorney: A written instrument which authorizes one person to act as another's agent or attorney. The power of attorney may be for a definite, specific act, or it may be general in nature. The terms of the written power of attorney may specify when it will expire. If not, the power of attorney usually expires when the person granting it dies. ^{Source: OCC}
• Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
• Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
• Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.
• Purchaser: means any person to whom a timeshare interest is offered or who has contracted to purchase a timeshare interest. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:1131.2
• Reporter: Makes a record of court proceedings and prepares a transcript, and also publishes the court's opinions or decisions (in the courts of appeals).
• Rescission: The cancellation of budget authority previously provided by Congress. The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 specifies that the President may propose to Congress that funds be rescinded. If both Houses have not approved a rescission proposal (by passing legislation) within 45 days of continuous session, any funds being withheld must be made available for obligation.
• Spouse: means a person who is legally married to a member of this system. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:403
• Supported decisionmaking: means a process of supporting and accommodating an adult to enable the adult to make life decisions, including decisions related to where the adult wants to live, the services, supports, and medical care the adult wants to receive, with whom the adult wants to live, and where the adult wants to work, without impeding the self-determination of the adult. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 13:4261.102
• Supported decisionmaking agreement: is a n agreement between an adult and a supporter entered into under this Chapter. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 13:4261.102
• Supporter: means an individual who has attained the age of eighteen years of age and entered into a supported decisionmaking agreement with an adult. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 13:4261.102
• Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
• Timeshare interest: means an ownership "timeshare interest" a lease timeshare interest, a timeshare estate, and a timeshare use unless expressly provided otherwise and includes any of the following:

  (a)  A "timeshare estate" which is the right to occupy a timeshare property, coupled with present ownership or some right to future ownership in a timeshare property or a specified portion thereof. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:1131.2

• Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
• Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
• Trust account: A general term that covers all types of accounts in a trust department, such as estates, guardianships, and agencies. ^{Source: OCC}
• Warehouse: means a person engaged in the business of storing goods for hire. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 10:7-102
