- Ambulance service: means any person who through the use of one or more ambulances and certified emergency medical technicians as defined in Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:4751
- Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Board: means the board of commissioners of the Tri-Parish Juvenile Justice Commission. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 15:1096
- Board of commissioners: means a group of persons appointed under the provisions of law to exercise certain authorities over and have oversight and control of a levee district or levee and drainage district. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 38:281
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Controlled dangerous substance: means a drug, substance, or immediate precursor in Schedule I through V of Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:2602
- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- Dealer: means a person who in violation of Louisiana law manufactures, produces, ships, transports, or imports into Louisiana or in any manner acquires or possesses more than forty-two and one-half grams of marijuana, or seven or more grams of any controlled dangerous substance, or ten or more dosage units of any controlled dangerous substance which is not sold by weight. - Devise: To gift property by will.
- District: means the Tri-Parish Juvenile Justice District. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 15:1096
- Docket: A log containing brief entries of court proceedings.
- Electronic funds transfer: The transfer of money between accounts by consumer electronic systems-such as automated teller machines (ATMs) and electronic payment of bills-rather than by check or cash. (Wire transfers, checks, drafts, and paper instruments do not fall into this category.) Source: OCC
- Facility: means any juvenile detention facility, shelter care facility, or such other juvenile justice facility. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 15:1096
- Fiduciary: A trustee, executor, or administrator.
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.
- Governing authority: means the governing authority of a parish. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 15:1096
- Health care provider: means a person, partnership, corporation, facility, or institution licensed by this state to provide health care or professional services as a physician, dentist, chiropractor, podiatrist, optometrist, pharmacist, dietician, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or psychologist. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:4751
- Hospital: means an institution licensed as such by the state of Louisiana. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:4751
- Indemnification: In general, a collateral contract or assurance under which one person agrees to secure another person against either anticipated financial losses or potential adverse legal consequences. Source: FDIC
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
- Levee district: means a political subdivision of this state organized for the purpose and charged with the duty of constructing and maintaining levees, and all other things incidental thereto within its territorial limits. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 38:281
- Liabilities: The aggregate of all debts and other legal obligations of a particular person or legal entity.
- Lien: A claim against real or personal property in satisfaction of a debt.
- Marijuana: means all parts of plants of the Genus Cannabis, whether growing or not; the seeds thereof; the resin extracted from any part of such plant; and every compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such plant, its seeds or resin, but shall not include the mature stalks of such plant, fiber produced from such stalks, oil or cake made from the seeds of such plant, any other compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of such mature stalks (except the resin extracted therefrom), fiber, oil, or cake, or the sterilized seed of such plant which is incapable of germination. - Meeting: means a duly called meeting of the membership of a board when payment of per diem is authorized and such meeting is called for the express purpose of discussing activities or plans pertinent to the functions of the levee board itself. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 38:281
- Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
- Orleans Levee District: shall mean the levee district and political subdivision of the state which is referred to as the "Orleans Levee District" the "Board of Commissioners of the Orleans Levee District" or the "Orleans Levee Board". See Louisiana Revised Statutes 38:281
- Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program.
- Participating parish: means any parish which has entered into a participation agreement with the commission by which certain space within the facility is subleased to house juveniles from the participating parish. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 15:1096
- person: includes a body of persons, whether incorporated or not. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 1:10
- Person: means any individual, partnership, association, corporation, government, political subdivision, or governmental agency. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:4751
- Personal property: All property that is not real property.
- Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
- Recess: A temporary interruption of the legislative business.
- Recourse: An arrangement in which a bank retains, in form or in substance, any credit risk directly or indirectly associated with an asset it has sold (in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles) that exceeds a pro rata share of the bank's claim on the asset. If a bank has no claim on an asset it has sold, then the retention of any credit risk is recourse. Source: FDIC
- Secretary: means the secretary of the Department of Revenue or his duly authorized representatives. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:2602
- Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims.
- Stamp: means the impression, device, stamp, label, or print manufactured or printed as prescribed by the secretary by the use of which the tax levied hereunder is paid. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 47:2602
- Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
- Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
- Subtitle: means and includes all the Chapters in Subtitle II of this Title 47 and any other Title of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950 except the provisions of Chapter 1 of Subtitle IV of Title 47 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950 and estate taxes for the assessment, collection, administration, and enforcement of taxes, fees, licenses, penalties, and interest due the state of Louisiana which have been delegated to the Department of Revenue. - Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
- Tort: A civil wrong or breach of a duty to another person, as outlined by law. A very common tort is negligent operation of a motor vehicle that results in property damage and personal injury in an automobile accident.
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
- Venue: The geographical location in which a case is tried.

- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Ambulance service: means any person who through the use of one or more ambulances and certified emergency medical technicians as defined in Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:4751
- Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- Annuity: means annual payments for life, payable in equal monthly installments, derived from the accumulated contributions placed to the credit of the participant in the annuity reserve account. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:951.1
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Appellate: About appeals; an appellate court has the power to review the judgement of another lower court or tribunal.
- Appraisal: A determination of property value.
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
- Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
- Board of commissioners: means a group of persons appointed under the provisions of law to exercise certain authorities over and have oversight and control of a levee district or levee and drainage district. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 38:281
- Board of trustees: means and includes the members of the board of trustees of the retirement system. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:951.1
- Chambers: A judge's office.
- Charge to the jury: The judge's instructions to the jury concerning the law that applies to the facts of the case on trial.
- Clerk of court: An officer appointed by the court to work with the chief judge in overseeing the court's administration, especially to assist in managing the flow of cases through the court and to maintain court records.
- Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time.
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
- Employee: means any person regularly employed in any capacity under the control of the Orleans Parish School Board who is not a teacher or whose legal employment does not require the holding of a teacher's certificate, including employees of the public school lunch department, all skilled and unskilled employees of the maintenance department, managers, custodians, subcustodians, and others who are not temporarily employed, and are paid out of funds under the control of the Orleans Parish School Board, who are not now eligible for membership in any other retirement system created or established by the State of Louisiana or any of its political subdivisions. - Equitable: Pertaining to civil suits in "equity" rather than in "law." In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. For example, a trial by jury is normally available in "law" cases but not in "equity" cases. Source: U.S. Courts
- Escrow: Money given to a third party to be held for payment until certain conditions are met.
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.

- Interrogatories: Written questions asked by one party of an opposing party, who must answer them in writing under oath; a discovery device in a lawsuit.

- Pension reserve: means the present value of all payments to be made on account of any pension or benefit in lieu of any pension computed upon the basis of mortality tables adopted by the board of trustees, plus regular interest. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:951.1
- Pensions: means payments for life. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:701
- person: includes a body of persons, whether incorporated or not. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 1:10

- Pleadings: Written statements of the parties in a civil case of their positions. In the federal courts, the principal pleadings are the complaint and the answer.
- Prior service: means service rendered by an employee prior to the effective date of the establishment of this retirement system for which credit is allowable as provided in this Part. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:951.1
- Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
- Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
- Regular interest: means interest compounded annually at such rate as shall be determined by the board of trustees. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:951.1
- Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
- Retirement: means withdrawal from active service with a retirement allowance allowable under the provisions of this Part. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:951.1
- Retirement system: means the corporation known as the Orleans Parish School Employees' Retirement System established in Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:951.1
- Service: means service rendered by an employee as herein defined. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 11:951.1
- Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party.
- Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims.
- Statute: A law passed by a legislature.

- Temporary restraining order: Prohibits a person from an action that is likely to cause irreparable harm. This differs from an injunction in that it may be granted immediately, without notice to the opposing party, and without a hearing. It is intended to last only until a hearing can be held.
- Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
- Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
- Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
- Voir dire: The process by which judges and lawyers select a petit jury from among those eligible to serve, by questioning them to determine knowledge of the facts of the case and a willingness to decide the case only on the evidence presented in court. "Voir dire" is a phrase meaning "to speak the truth."
- Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
