Terms Used In Louisiana Revised Statutes > Title 9 > CODE TITLE XIX > Chapter 3 - Arbitration of Medical and Dental Services or Supplies Contracts

  • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
  • Deed: The legal instrument used to transfer title in real property from one person to another.
  • Dental practitioner: means anyone issued a permit or licensed to practice under the provisions of Chapter 9 of Title 37, when engaged in such practice, and shall include professional dental corporations and partnerships. See Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:4230
  • Escrow: Money given to a third party to be held for payment until certain conditions are met.
  • Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
  • Forgery: The fraudulent signing or alteration of another's name to an instrument such as a deed, mortgage, or check. The intent of the forgery is to deceive or defraud. Source: OCC
  • Intangible property: Property that has no intrinsic value, but is merely the evidence of value such as stock certificates, bonds, and promissory notes.
  • Medical institution: means any hospital as defined in Louisiana Revised Statutes 9:4230
  • Medical practitioner: means anyone issued a permit or licensed to practice under the provisions of Chapters 11, 13, or 15 of Title 37, when engaged in such practice, and shall include professional medical corporations and partnerships, pharmacists, optometrists, podiatrists, chiropractors, physical therapists, and psychologists.   • Mortgage: The written agreement pledging property to a creditor as collateral for a loan.
  • Mortgage loan: A loan made by a lender to a borrower for the financing of real property. Source: OCC
  • Restitution: The court-ordered payment of money by the defendant to the victim for damages caused by the criminal action.
  • Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
  • Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
  • Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
