1. Proceeding authorized. A proceeding to adjudicate the parentage of a child may be maintained in accordance with this chapter and applicable rules of procedure.

Terms Used In Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 1834
- Child: means an individual of any age whose parentage may be determined under this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 1832
- Child support: means money paid directly to a parent, to another person or agency awarded parental rights and responsibilities with respect to a child or to the department on behalf of a child receiving public assistance and medical or dental insurance coverage provided on behalf of a child pursuant to court order. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 1501
- Department: means the Department of Health and Human Services and its agents and authorized representatives. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 101
- Parentage: means the legal relationship between a child and a parent as established in this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 1832
- Person: means an individual, trust, estate, partnership, association, company, corporation, political subdivision of the State, instrumentality of the State or other entity. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 101
- Probate: Proving a will
- Record: means information that is inscribed on a tangible medium or that is stored in an electronic or other medium and is retrievable in perceivable form. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A Sec. 1832
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
2. Original actions. Original actions to adjudicate parentage may be commenced only in District Court.

3. Other proceedings. The District Court and the Probate Court are authorized to adjudicate parentage under this chapter when parentage is an issue in any other pending proceeding.

4. No right to jury. There is no right to demand a jury trial in an action to determine parentage.

5. Disclosure of social security numbers. A person who is a party to a parentage action shall disclose that person’s social security number to the court. The social security number of a person subject to a parentage adjudication must be placed in the court records relating to the adjudication. The record of a person’s social security number is confidential and is not open to the public. The court shall disclose a person’s social security number to the department for child support enforcement purposes.
