A vacancy in the office of United States Senator is governed by the following provisions. [PL 1985, c. 161, §6 (NEW).]
1. Interim appointment. Within a reasonable time after the vacancy occurs, the Governor shall appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy until that person’s successor is elected and qualified.

Terms Used In Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 391
- General election: means the regular election of state and county officials occurring biennially in November. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1
- Primary election: means the regular election for the election of nominees of a party for the general election. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1
- Question: means any proposition submitted to the voters. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 21-A Sec. 1
- Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
- United States: includes territories and the District of Columbia. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
2. Vacancy 60 days before primary. If the vacancy occurs 60 days or more before a regular primary election, nominees must be chosen at the primary and a successor elected for the remainder of the term at the general election.

3. Vacancy less than 60 days before primary. If the vacancy occurs less than 60 days before a regular primary election, nominees must be chosen at the next regular primary following the one in question, and a successor elected for the remainder of the term at the general election.
