- Administrator: means the department administering the program or an authorized 3rd party conducting any functions necessary to implement and operate the program. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Authority: means the Paid Family and Medical Leave Benefits Authority, under section 850?O. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A
- Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
- Base period: means the first 4 calendar quarters immediately preceding the first day of an individual's benefit year. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A
- Benefit year: means the 12-month period beginning on the first day of the calendar week immediately preceding the date on which family leave benefits or medical leave benefits commence. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A
- Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Labor. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Contributions: means the payments remitted by an employer or self-employed individual to the fund, as required by this subchapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A
- Controller: means the State Controller. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.

See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A Family leave: means leave taken pursuant to section 850?B, subsection 2. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A Family leave benefits: means wage replacement paid pursuant to sections 850?B and 850?C to a covered individual while the covered individual is on family leave. A. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-AFiduciary: A trustee, executor, or administrator. Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006. Fund: means the Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Fund established under section 850?E. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs. Health care provider: means an individual licensed to practice medicine, surgery, dentistry, chiropractic, podiatry, midwifery or osteopathy or any other individual determined by the administrator to be capable of providing health care services. Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program. Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses. Program: means the paid family and medical leave benefits program established in section 850?B. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A Qualifying exigency: means an exigency determined pursuant to the federal Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, 29 United States Code § 2612(a)(1)(E). See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business. Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant. Safe leave: means any leave taken because the covered individual or the covered individual's family member is a victim of violence, assault, sexual assault under Title 17?A, chapter 11, stalking or any act that would support an order for protection under Title 19?A, chapter 103. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A Self-employed individual: means an independent contractor as described in section 1043, subsection 11, paragraph E, a sole proprietor, a member of a limited liability company or limited liability partnership or an individual whose net profit or loss from a business must be reported to the Department of Administrative and Financial Services, Bureau of Revenue Services and who resides in the State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A Serious health condition: means an illness, injury, impairment, pregnancy, recovery from childbirth or physical, mental or psychological condition that involves inpatient care in a hospital, hospice or residential medical care center or continuing treatment by a health care provider. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A State average weekly wage: means the average weekly wage as published by the department for the State as a whole for the 12 most recently reported months. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 850-A Statute: A law passed by a legislature. Town: includes cities and plantations, unless otherwise expressed or implied.
