- Access aisle: means a designated space for maneuvering a wheelchair or other mobility device when entering or exiting a vehicle, and that is immediately adjacent to a properly designated parking space for a person with a disability. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101
- Administrator: means the Superintendent of Consumer Credit Protection within the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 6172
- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- Automobile: means a motor vehicle designed for the conveyance of passengers that has a seating capacity of not more than 15 persons, including the operator. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101
- Bureau: means the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101
- Certified counselor: means an individual certified by a training program or organization approved by the administrator that authenticates the competence of the individual providing education and assistance to consumers in connection with debt management services. - Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Consumer education program: means a program or plan that seeks to improve the financial literacy of consumers. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 6172
- Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time.
- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- Debt management service: means :

See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 6172Debt management service provider: means a person, wherever located, that provides or offers to provide to a consumer in this State any debt management services, in return for a fee or other consideration, and a person located in this State that provides or offers to provide to a consumer who is not a resident of this State any debt management services, in return for a fee or other consideration. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 6172 Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime. Department: means the Department of Transportation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Dependent: A person dependent for support upon another. Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006. Gross weight: means the weight in pounds of an empty vehicle or axle plus the weight of the maximum load to be carried by the vehicle or axle. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs. highway: means a public way. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Infant: means a person who has not attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72 Law enforcement officer: means a person who by virtue of public employment is vested by law with a duty to maintain public order or to make arrests for crimes, whether that duty extends to all crimes or is limited to specific crimes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC License: includes , but is not limited to, a nonresident operating privilege and the privilege of a person to apply for or obtain a license or permit to operate a motor vehicle. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Low-speed vehicle: means a 4-wheeled motor vehicle that is able to attain a speed of at least 20 miles per hour but not more than 25 miles per hour and is less than 3,000 pounds in unloaded weight. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72 Motor carrier: means a contract carrier, a common carrier or a private carrier of property or passengers by motor vehicle. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Municipal officers: means the mayor and municipal officers or councilors of a city, the members of the select board or councilors of a town and the assessors of a plantation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Person: means an individual, corporation, firm, partnership, joint venture, association, fiduciary, trust, estate or any other legal or commercial entity. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Person: means an individual or an organization. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 6172 Pickup truck: means a truck with a registered gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or less. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Public way: means a way, owned and maintained by the State, a county or a municipality, over which the general public has a right to pass. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land. Registration: means the registration certificate, plates and renewal devices pertaining to the registration of a vehicle, including temporary registered gross weight increases. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Resident: means a person who has declared or established residency in this State or has been domiciled in this State for a period of at least 30 days, except for persons in compliance with section 109, subsection 1. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims. Special equipment: means equipment that is drawn by a motor vehicle and that is not designed or used to convey property other than hand tools or parts used in connection with the operation of that equipment, including, but not limited to, air compressors, conveyors, cement mixers, wood splitting or sawing machines, sprayers, compactors, pumps, drills and brush chippers. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Stock race car: means a factory-produced motor vehicle that is equipped with roll bars or bracing welded or attached to the frame in a permanent manner, special safety belts and firewalls and that has part of the body removed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system. Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries. Traffic: means pedestrians, ridden or herded animals, vehicles, bicycles and other conveyances either singly or together using public way for travel. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 29-A Sec. 101 Traffic infraction: means any violation of any provision of this Title, or of any rules established under this Title, not expressly defined as a crime or as a civil violation and otherwise not punishable by incarceration. Truck: means a motor vehicle designed and used primarily to carry property.
