- Accumulated contributions: means the sum of all the amounts credited to a member's individual account, together with regular interest thereon. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201
- Actuarial equivalent: means an amount of equal value when computed at the discount rate contained in actuarial assumptions adopted by the board of trustees. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201
- Adult: means a person who has attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
- Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
- Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.

See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC Board: means the Manufactured Housing Board. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Board of trustees: means the board provided for in section 1231. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Child or children: means a person who has not attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Commission: means the Maine Public Drinking Water Commission. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2660-B Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Health and Human Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 1-A Common law: The legal system that originated in England and is now in use in the United States. It is based on judicial decisions rather than legislative action. Community water system: means a public water system that serves at least 15 service connections used by year-round residents or regularly serves at least 25 year-round residents. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2660-B Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant. Contaminant: means any physical, chemical, biological or radiological substance or matter in water. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2601 Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time. Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed. County commissioners: means the county commissioners of Androscoggin County. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 30-A Sec. 722 Creditable service: means membership service and prior service as a judge which is credited towards retirement in accordance with subchapter IV. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries. Dealer: means a person engaged in the sale, offering for sale, brokering or distribution of manufactured housing to a licensed dealer, developer dealer or consumer. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime. Department: means the Department of Health and Human Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1642 Department: means the Department of Health and Human Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201Developer dealer: means a person who purchases state-certified manufactured housing from a licensed manufacturer or dealer for placement on property owned by the developer dealer and who offers the manufactured housing for sale to the initial purchaser of the manufactured housing. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Division: means the Division of Health Engineering within the Bureau of Health, Department of Human Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2660-B Division: means the Executive Department, Division of Community Services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1642 Earnable compensation: means the annual salary as a judge. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Educational facility: includes but is not limited to career or technical schools, high schools and postsecondary programs. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Entitlement: A Federal program or provision of law that requires payments to any person or unit of government that meets the eligibility criteria established by law. Entitlements constitute a binding obligation on the part of the Federal Government, and eligible recipients have legal recourse if the obligation is not fulfilled. Social Security and veterans' compensation and pensions are examples of entitlement programs. Equitable: Pertaining to civil suits in "equity" rather than in "law." In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. For example, a trial by jury is normally available in "law" cases but not in "equity" cases. Source: U.S. Courts Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other. Federal manufactured home construction and safety standard: means the standard for the construction, design and performance of a manufactured home that meets the needs of the public including the need for quality, durability and safety and that has been duly adopted by the Federal Government pursuant to the National Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards Act of 1974, as amended by the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000, 42 United States Code § 5401, et seq. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006. Fund: means the Public Drinking Water Fund. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2660-B Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value. Health care provider: means an appropriately licensed, certified or registered provider of mental or physical health care, in either the public or private sector. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Income supplementation programs: means programs designed to supplement the income of a person or family and includes Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, food distribution, general assistance, supplemental security income or any other income related program utilizing state-administered funds. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1642 Inspection agency: means an approved person or organization, public or private, determined by the board to be qualified by reason of facilities, personnel and demonstrated ability and independence of judgment to provide for inspection and approval of the design, construction or installation of manufactured housing in compliance with the standards and the rules adopted in accordance with this Act. A. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002Installer: means a person engaged in the installation or servicing of state-certified manufactured housing. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Judge: means a Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court or the Superior Court, any Judge of the District Court, any Administrative Court Judge or any Associate Administrative Court Judge who is actively serving as of December 1, 1984, or who is appointed subsequent to December 1, 1984, but does not include Active Retired Judges. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Litigation: A case, controversy, or lawsuit. Participants (plaintiffs and defendants) in lawsuits are called litigants. Manufactured housing: means a structural unit or units designed to be used as a dwelling or dwellings and constructed in a manufacturing facility and then transported by the use of its own chassis or placement on an independent chassis to a building site. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Manufacturer: means any person engaged in manufacturing or producing manufactured housing and then selling it to a dealer. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Mechanic: means an individual engaged in the installation or servicing of HUD-code or pre-HUD-code homes. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Member: means a judge who is included in the membership of the Maine Judicial Retirement System as provided in section 1301. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Membership service: means service rendered while a member of the Maine Judicial Retirement System for which credit is allowed under section 1302. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Month: means a calendar month. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72 Mortgagee: The person to whom property is mortgaged and who has loaned the money. Mortgagor: The person who pledges property to a creditor as collateral for a loan and who receives the money. Multiple community water district: means that area comprising all municipalities served in whole or part by a single public water system plus those public water system zones within multiservice municipalities served by the same public water system. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Multiple community water system district-wide election: means an election held in each municipality within a multiple community water district to determine whether or not to fluoridate the water supply of that system. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Multiservice municipality: means any municipality served in whole or in part by more than one public water system. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Municipal officers: means the mayor and municipal officers or councilors of a city, the members of the select board or councilors of a town and the assessors of a plantation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72 Municipal officials: means the mayor, aldermen, councillors or manager of a city and the members of the select board, councillors or manager of a town located in Androscoggin County. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 30-A Sec. 722 Municipality: means a city, town or plantation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Noncommunity water system: means a public water system that is not a community water system. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2660-B Operator: means a person or entity who owns or controls, or who has operational responsibility for, a roller-skating rink. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 604 Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses. Person: means an individual or entity, including but not limited to a corporation, partnership, firm, organization, company, homeowner, consumer or purchaser. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 10 Sec. 9002 Person: means any individual, partnership, company, public or private corporation, political subdivision or agency of the State, department, agency or instrumentality of the United States or any other legal entity. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2601 Personal property: All property that is not real property. Plaintiff: The person who files the complaint in a civil lawsuit. Primacy: means the federally delegated primary enforcement authority to adopt, implement and enforce federally mandated drinking water standards promulgated pursuant to the federal Safe Drinking Water Act as amended. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2660-B Prior service: means all service before December 1, 1984, as a judge. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Probable cause: A reasonable ground for belief that the offender violated a specific law. Program: means the Maine Public Drinking Water Control Program. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2660-B Public law: A public bill or joint resolution that has passed both chambers and been enacted into law. Public laws have general applicability nationwide. public water system: includes any collection, treatment, storage or distribution pipes or other constructed conveyances, structures or facilities under the control of the supplier of water and used primarily in connection with such a system, and any collection or pretreatment storage facilities not under that control that are used primarily in connection with such a system. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2601 Public water system: means the public water agency, company, utility, district or other entity serving one or more municipalities in whole or in part. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Public water system zone: means any one of the 2 or more areas of a multiservice municipality served by a single public water system, as further defined in section 2657. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Real estate: includes lands and all tenements and hereditaments connected therewith, and all rights thereto and interests therein. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72 Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land. registered mail: when used in connection with any requirement for notice by mail shall mean either registered mail or certified mail. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72 Registered petitioners: means those registered voters residing in a single community water district or, in the case of a multiple community water system district-wide election, those registered voters residing in the multiple community water district who have accepted the responsibility of receiving notice concerning the filing of petitions pursuant to section 2655, subsection 3. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Regular interest: means interest at the rate which the Board of Trustees of the Maine Public Employees Retirement System sets from time to time, in accordance with Title 5, section 17156. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Related health and medical services: means all health or medical services utilizing state-administered funds, including Medicaid and health block grants. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1642 Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant. Report: means the State's social services report. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1642 Retirement: means the termination of membership service with a retirement allowance granted under this chapter. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Roller-skating rink: means a building, facility or premises that provides an area used for roller skating. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 604 Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party. Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims. Single community water district: means a municipality served in whole or in part by a water system which serves no other municipalities. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 22 Sec. 2651-A Skater: means a person in a roller-skating rink for the purpose of skating. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 8 Sec. 604 Social service: means any children's, youth, adult or elderly service and substance use disorder, community action, developmental disability, home-heating assistance, juvenile, mental health, intellectual disability, older Americans, poverty, rehabilitation, transportation, weatherization or other social service that may be defined in the future and that is operated by the departments or the division utilizing state-administered funds, including related health and medical services and income supplementation programs. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1642 Spouse: means the person currently legally married to a member. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 State - administered funds: means all General Fund money, dedicated funds, federal funds, fees, grants, 3rd-party reimbursements, vendor payments or other funds or revenues available for expenditure by the departments or the division in support of the provision of a social service. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 1642 Surviving spouse: means the spouse alive at the time of the death of the member or former member. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 4 Sec. 1201 Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence. Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge. Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
