Whenever it shall appear to the commissioner necessary, in order to ascertain the true boundaries of any tract or portion of the lands mentioned in this chapter, or to enable him to describe and dispose of the same, in suitable and convenient lots, he may cause all such necessary surveys to be made; and the expenses thereof shall be paid out of the proper fund, in the same manner as the other incidental expenses of the land office.
